Lower Buckhorn Lake (Kawartha Lakes, Trent Severn Canal) Ontario Canada.
Back to Map Project List

Lake Description:
Lower Buckhorn Lake is one of the Kawartha Lakes and also part of the Trent Severn Canal System that extends from the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, a distance of 386 kms (as the fish swims).  I know there are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye (pickeral), and muskie in this lake.  Send me an email to tell me where to look for the fish based on the grid I have placed over the lake.
Getting There:

Summer Dream Tours have done such a wonderful job of explaining how to get to Lower Buckhorn Lake from anywhere on the planet that I'll just make a link right to them. But don't forget to come back to this page by clicking that BACK button.

The colours indicate where you are likely to find fish - or hit something with a name that will sink your boat.

Visitor Tips:

Jack Van Buuren of Adventure Fishing Maps says there are no decent public launches on Lower Buckhorn that he knows of, but there are several resorts at the village of Buckhorn that have good launches (for a fee).

MARTIN says "I have fished Lovesick for about 8 years from spring opening into mid June."  Martin gives a pile of tips below....

Big largemouth, feisty Musky and declining walleye are my experience. All fast water is sanctuary in early season. Typical presentations all work but for some reason I seem to come back to blue rapalas for walleye anywhere in Karawartha lakes including Rice. Worm harnesses always work when nothing else does for walleye. From shore cast minnow baits into the pool at the bottom of the fast water where Lovesick pours over the damn into Stoney for decent walleye.... Musky seem to like larger gold or perch rapalas.

Grid B11 noted by me on attached map as area 1. The area from the south Black Duck damn to the main Lake is generally shallow and weedy and contains mostly largemouth, except that at the faster water coming out of the damn I have caught a few smallmouth. There is a deep hole just out from the damn and I have caught a few walleye's in it. You have to jig the hole.

Grid B12 noted by me as area 2. Mostly largemouth along the north shore and a very occasional musky or 'eye. There is a hole middle of the grid and there should be a few walleyes in it. Lots of perch!

Grid North end of grid C12 and south end of Grid B12 noted by me as area 3 ...again very weedy but I have found that trolling with a shallow crank produces some decent Musky and a few bass.

Grid B13 noted as area 4. If the weeds are down low enough this area is fishable. As the weeds grow, this area is brutal to even get a motor through. The area has produced the most Musky for me in the daytime and in the evening can produce some really decent walleye. I normally troll a rapala through here for 'eyes and anything that moves with a hook catches Musky when they're on..

Grid C12 & C13 noted as area 5. Definetely a walleye area. Fast and deep water from the damn seems to draw the walleyes to the area. In the spring I try to jig the edges of the fast water and definetly suggest drifting a worm harness along and towards the first set of island in grid C13. There is a white cottage on the tip of this island to use as a landmark. Use the finder to your advantage here as the fish pile up at various depths and you have to find the right depth contour to fish. There is rock structure through the area so move around to find 'em then fish 'em.

Grid C13 noted as area 6. This was 'til now my own secret spot that no-one else seemed to fish! Its a small area just south of the island and has a deeper weed bed in the spring. I've pulled a walleye or two out of this area every time I've fished it. Again blue floating rapalas or diving shad rap.
