Re: Happy New Year!!! The Ups and Downs of 2022...

I'm glad your new boat wasn't too badly damaged. But it sucks looking for trucks right now with the shortage of everything. I found myself a new Tacoma at the end of February and only got the cap on it in May before it was stolen out of my driveway in June. I had to go down to Hawkesbury Toyota in J...

Re: 2023 ice conditions Lanark Highlands in around Calabogie

Well, there is definitely ice in Lanark. I drilled a series of holes last night at the narrows between Clayton and Taylor lakes. I measured a very consistent 9". There was a little white ice at the surface, but I was surprised and impressed with the majority being clear black ice underneath. Th...

Re: 2023 ice conditions Lanark Highlands in around Calabogie

I was wondering about that myself. I am heading out to Lanark tomorrow. I'm going to check out Clayton lake
and Patterson lake. I'm not heading up to calabogie though. I will let you know what I find out.

Lake Dore Ice Crappies?

I have been wanting to try ice fishing Lake Dore for Crappies the last two years. Somehow I haven't gotten around to it yet. The broad scale monitoring bulletin shows them at 12% of the fish catch, with a lot of eater sizes. The guide to eating Ontario fish shows them to be pretty clean too! I think...

Re: Shirley's Bay 2022 Ice season

Oh, we all go out icefishing together. My wife declared I should buy our first pop up shelter. She found trying to breastfeed our daughter in the wind quite unpleasant. The kids like going out too, especially when they have friends to play with. I do go out more often on my own, especially in the ni...

I purchased this one from Amazon with a Frozen Lines Label. Unfortunately, they are currently unavailable. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71RDcVzcnEL._AC_SL1500_.jpg https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07SYK2ZS2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I haven't had the opportunity to...

Cordless Drill Augers

I switched to my cordless drill a couple of years ago and I won't go back. Last year I upgraded my drill and batteries for more power and life. I have been using a modified 8" hand auger with a drill adapter, 12" extension, and a float. It works really well, but I was going through cheap d...

Re: New Ontario Bait Regulations.... coming January 1, 2022

I was just reading up on the new rules. Something that concerned/confused me was about transporting minnows home from adjacent sections of the Ottawa River. We in Ottawa and surrounding area are in the Southern BMZ, and we are allowed to bring minnows with us onto the Ottawa River to, say ice fish. ...

Re: Shirley's Bay 2022 Ice season

We just had a new baby, so I'm happy the seasons delayed or I'd be chompin at the bit! I haven't even gone to look at the bay. Is there any ice forming at all?

For the last two years, I had already wet my lines!

Re: American Eel - Rare Catch!

That is awesome, you won't forget about that catch! I know they used to be quite plentiful all the way up the Ottawa and all its tributaries. They are also very good eating. You'll know what I mean if you've ever tried unagi at a sushi restaurant. You can still fish for them in some rivers along the...

Re: Covid Restrictions

Well, there is an alternate solution. Just say "actually officer, I plan to be here for two weeks as long as I catch enough fish to eat!" :D The annoying thing is the lockdown restrictions are so full of holes nothing is likely to stick if you fight it. However, the police and other author...

Re: Underwater Cameras?

I bought the aquavu microrevolution 5.0 this fall. I've only used it about 7 times icefishing, but so far I like it. During the day I turn my sonar off and just use the camera to watch my lure. It is especially useful for finding weeds, structure and bottom type before setting up my tent. It's amazi...

Re: Ice Fishing Perth Area

I don't think RJ meant anything accusatory by it. I imagine he was confused by your wording and was trying to offer helpful clarification of the regs in case you had it twisted about. I get that you didn't and I understood where you were going, but it was unclear and I had to read it a couple of tim...

Re: Is It Time Yet!!!

I was at Shirley's Bay today. There was one hut out this morning already. The ice was pretty good, mostly clear black ice 6" thick. I tried out my new camera. I watched several perch take the bait. One really nice walleye rolled right past the lense but didn't stop to eat. Still, it was great t...
