I have only started pinching the barbs on my hooks this year. One thing I found is that most of the time the barb will snap off when I use the needle-nose pliers, so there is just a bump left on the hook. I find fishing from a canoe uncomfortable (though I've been in rented canoes). The main thing, I think, is that you need an anchor of some kind, otherwise you never stay in the same place long enough to cast a second time.
