I'm afraid that life has gotten me away from most fishing. I'm heading to Algonquin for a few days in May, but I haven't cast a fly since I was back in Newfoundland last July (rose a couple of salmon, hooked none, don't ask...) If I'm lucky I'll get out some more this summer, and if I do I'll likely...

Crap. No pix, no fish, no nuthin. Only blisters to show for all my efforts (it was pretty tiring to be using a big rod with one of the biggest fly reels I've ever seen). Fishing was pretty slow over the weekend, with only a handful of fish taken. The theory is that colder waters and late ice in the ...

Salmon fishing with the family

Well it's off to Newfoundland tomorrow for a bit of salmon fishing (in between showing off the new baby to the family). My dads family fishes the Humber River at Big Falls every summer, and this is just the second summer I've been able to make it out there for a long while. The place is absolutely g...

stocked lake rant. why are so many stock lakes inaccessable? what is the point of stocking a lake, having a put-grow-take fishery, one that is supposed to relieve pressure on wild fisheries, in a place that most anglers can't get to. Feeling better now. I couldn't agree more. It would be different ...

Crown Land

Last year I drove out towards Calabogie, just to see what kind of crown land access there was (for hiking and other things, as well as fishing). I found it very disappointing that whenever I was driving through what the map said was Crown Land there were constant "Private Property" signs. ...

That sounds like a shame about the rude people. Is it possible to wade in the river away from the people on shore?

I have only started pinching the barbs on my hooks this year. One thing I found is that most of the time the barb will snap off when I use the needle-nose pliers, so there is just a bump left on the hook. I think it is much better, especially when you hook a little 5 inch fish and he's got the entir...

Thanks for the info. I have to be home for 8PM on Tuesday, but I'd love to swing by. Where and when?

I drive past Hog's Back frequently, as my wife works on Colonnade, but I'd never seen anyone fly-fishing out that way. I tried to get out and do a bit of fishing this weekend, as my wife is back in Newfoundland for a wedding. Saturday morning I set off to try the east bank or the Rideau at Black Rap...

Wow, now that sounds like a fun time! My wife and I have been talking about going to Stratford, so I 'd imagine a little time on the Grand is in my future. Probably next spring.

I'll post my (not quite as exciting) weekend report when I get time later today.

Virus Killing fish in Great Lakes

I'm up in Ottawa, and don't really fish the great lakes, but I saw this on the news: Virus killing fish in Great Lakes Last Updated Thu, 27 Jul 2006 12:12:24 EDT CBC News A deadly fish virus suspected of killing thousands of fish in the Great Lakes basin appears to be spreading to new species, resea...

I find fishing from a canoe uncomfortable (though I've been in rented canoes). The main thing, I think, is that you need an anchor of some kind, otherwise you never stay in the same place long enough to cast a second time.

I must confess to looking at kayaks on-line and at the new Le Baron. :D

Well, I was down at Black Rapids this morning to try out my new gear. There were several people fishing the spit that extends downstream after you cross the lock (none with a fly), but I waded out into that area and casted out to the main flow of water. I caught a few little bass fairly close in, bu...
