At the time I posted my reply, I had just returned from Lake Nipissing.
I could see that the lake was frozen completely over. I was told by some locals that it was open just prior to that, and it has open up again due to the warm climes.

So blast away. Were you there?

I would say, always bring minnows, but also consider frozen lake smelt for Pike.

Ice Chisel

For Ice no thicker than 6" I would consider a handmade (welded) 3 tooth chisel. I've seen some that would cut a nice 10" dia. hole easy.

One thing I would consider would be some sort of plastic pipes that would be used as posts for a tarpaulin. These pipes would be of diameters that would allow them to slide into one another so that they wouldn't take up much room. Once you are behind the tarp, out of the wind, you will be relatively...
