Update

FYI, there are still lot's of salmon running the local streams in southern Ontario. Also noticed a number of steelhead coming up. Some of the smaller streams are very low and clear so I would wait for some rain before heading down.

The Madawaska has some good SM fishing so any of the fly's you mention will work. The Woolly bugger has got to be one of the best all-round patterns for SM. In regards to colour, I like olive, rusty brown, orange/black and just orange tied in various sizes. Also, Zonkers work well tied in white, oli...

Yes, I have seen them on rivers when fishing down in NY state. I keep several ant patterns in my fly box and have caught trout with them. When they are around, trout will target them - in fact, nothing else seems to work when they are around in good numbers.

Totally agree with beachburger. You can get away with type II or type III sinking lines, but, the sink rate is slower - i.e. you can still get down 30', it will just take longer. Personally, I fish with both type II and III, but, I normally fish around the 10' to 20' range so these lines work just f...

According to Fenwick, this reel can hold 100 yards of 20 lb nylon backing - http://www.fenwickfishing.com/prod.php? ... 1078951%29. It's to bad that they don't have a support link to download manuals.

Hatches

I cannot speak about early morning this year as I have been fishing mostly in the evenings and a couple of times late in the morning and afternoon - call me lazy for not making the effort to get up early. Anyways, I was having great success in the evenings and even in the afternoon so I never did ge...

Still Good

Went down to Wilmington again this past weekend and the fishing was just fantastic. All the rain really cooled down the river - think it was around 59F according to local reports. Caught a number of browns and rainbows and even managed to get a couple of wild brook trout - off the beaten path near A...

There are a number of sites available. Just google on this topic and you will get hundreds of hits. Personally, I tie most of my flies, but, I would believe any of on-line store will be fine. Most of the flies available today are made in China - nothing wrong with this at all since most of the best ...

2-Fly

I did not attend the 2-fly this year - to many things going on last week so I never did get around to registering. Anyways, the attendance was down this year, but, the show and dinner was good from what I hear.

Ausable River - Wilmington NY

The fishing is very good down here on the West Branch of the AuSable River. There are all sorts of hatches taking place - caddis, mayfly, yellow stones, etc - so the trout are rising if you like surface activity. Also, the trout are taking stick caddis if you like nymphing. Managed to land a number ...

Thunderstorms???

Went out yesterday anyways - no thunderstorms nor any rain. The water level is very high and fishing was just OK. Managed to land a few SM, but nothing of any size. I think it will be better in a week or so providing the rain drops off a bit.

Fins

I am using a pair of driver fins I purchased at the Dive Shop located at the Home Hardware shop at Wellington & Holland - the lowest price will be around $80 but they really work very well. I picked up a pair of cheap booties that you can get at any sporting store. Bring in your booties and simp...

Lake Placid

Just got back from Lake Placid this past weekend. I did not get much fishing but did talk to a few people who participated in the two-fly competition this past weekend. Wow, there was a lot of good size browns and rainbows caught - a good number in the 14 to 18 inch range. Next year, I do plan to re...
