I have never had any problems with peacock herl unraveling on flies...unless they have caught many fish :D It is important to keep the windings tight and make sure that they are locked in with several winding of thread. Another trick you could employ, is when you catch the end of the herl with the t...

As Beachburger suggested you can twist several strands together, but twist them together around your tying thread (similar to dubbing) and them wrap them onto the hook shank.

Good job Fishboy.

Just curious, do you get some odd looks when you travel by train with all your fishing gear?

Happy New Year,

Hi Todd,

I dropped by to try out some of the Orvis rods and partake in your open house. Good turn out and I enjoyed meeting some of the members. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to meet you, maybe next time.

Cheers,

Paul,

Another great effort on your part for putting the swap together and posting all the photos and patterns. The flies look really great, I already have my 8wt strung up and I'm ready to go....unfortunately it's still 3 months to go

Cheers,

Hi Salar, That's a good question. There are so many patterns I would like to tie up this winter that I find it hard to decide where to start. Here's a few I would like tackle.... Streamers: Various Woolly Bugger patterns (probably the most useful and versatile fly pattern out there) Baby Brook Trout...

Hi Salar, I looked through my library here and in "Tying Nymphs" 2nd ed. by Randall Kaufmann there is one dragon fly nymph that should do the trick. (I haven't tied this myself but I think I will add it to my winters tying list  ) Gierach Dragon http://www.westfly.com/patterns/wet/gi...

Salar, thanks for the links. Getting into rod building is not very expensive. I have made all of my wooden rod stands and thread tensioner (from a slightly modified cheap fly tying bobbin). I bought a very small 6rpm motor from Cabelas several years ago which I build into a wooden stand. If you can ...

Anyone building a new Rod this winter?

As winter is starting to take hold and we are forced to put the fly rod away (except for ice fishing or if you travel south:D ) other piscatorial pursuits are taken up. There is fly tying to fill up all our boxes and try to tie some new patterns but are any of you going to build a new fly rod this w...

Having lived in the west in "Trout Paradise" I can trully say that fishing chironomid hatches are a lot of fun. We never had the freakish sized ones but they were usually size 14 to 20 and I would typically fish a size 18 Bow-Tie Buzzer in black or olive. Often with a bead head midge dropp...

"Washing line", I have never fished 3 flies (probably would end up in a tangled mess) but I regularly fish a dropper and once I got a double while stillwater fishing, a brown and a cutthroat on the same cast :D that was cool! dryfly... I was just down at the international fly tying symposi...

I don't really want to bad mouth the club (not my intent), but the Ottawa Fly Fishers club just didn't work out for me. I had joined in September 2002.
