If all you want to do is figure out the depth, a cheap humminbird will be fine. I have two of them on my boat and they do work, but I don't trust them as 'fishfinders'.

I too have started keeping a log this year. Only in excel though. Keep track of locations, presentations, and general success. I don't record the weather....
