Check-out DFO's baitfish primer next time. It will help you identify other species that may not be legal bait fish such as Rudd, which could be confused with Golden Shiners...maybe Commons.....but are an introduced invasive. http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/regions/central/pub/baitfish-appat-on/pdf/baitfish...

My family since about 2000 has done a trip pretty much every year to Beaverland Lodge on Marten River typically at the end of August or in early September. We usually fish Big Marten Lake and fishing is often fairly slow. We never catch anything trolling and typically we end up working a few rock st...

I was there last Saturday and the ice was moving around. I was hoping to put in by the Christian camp but there ice was moving closer to the launch. At Cedar Haven into Hydro Bay it was wide open and then at the mouth of the River by the boat launch it was open as well. I thought it would have been ...

Anyword on Muskrat? I'm still hoping to slip the boat in Saturday morning bright and early. :D :D :D :D :D I find spring fishing more dangerous than ice fishing, atleast with bad ice you have the chance to get back up on it, when you're free swiming in the middle of a lake and the temperatures are s...

I typically dont find sounds dont scare the fish. My ice shack makes lots of creaking sounds when I'm in it and I have the radio on, or when ice fishing with my truck I usually have the radio on, and I've caught fish with snow-machines whipping around my hole.

I've got my fingers crossed for Friday. I also have my own secret spots but I'll be running lead core to about 15-20 FOW depending on what depth the fish finder spots them.

Carp Fishing the Nation

Anyone ever head out after ice off for Carp on the Nation? I saw the ice is going off the Castor and on the Nation at St. Albert. I am in the Nation Valley area (chesterville to st. albert) quite a bit and I am thinking about heading out one evening and getting a line wet. I have seen Carp climbing ...

Tom Johnson of the MNR has done a lot of work on farm escapees and native (introduced) bows. Along the north shore and the north side of the island you get escapees, but they can't swim well, are too fat, too small of a tail to swim up stream and they have low reproductive rates. If you're on the so...

If we're heading all the way up there. Head to Manitoulin.....I've fished for steelies there on a variety of little creeks, the Kegawong, or in little current or swift current. If you want numbers, you can fish the north side of the island and catch copious amounts of escapees, if its native (oxymor...

 Whoo-wee, those are fine lookin' fish. How big is the second one?!?! Judging from that bottom picture, I think I've fished that lake and got skunked. Of course, I simply said "fished out", thanks for proving me wrong.

Do you know the story of the Aurora Trout? Speckle subspecies originally only in two lakes in Sudbury, Tower and Lighthouse. The species was brought back from only a few fish after acidification and failed attempts at culturing them and finally it was succesfully stocked into - what I thought was on...
