Re: Looking for some Eastern Ontario Fly rivers

Forgot to mentions flies. I've pretty much got it narrowed down to three Patterns for 90% of my smallmouth count. Grizzly buggar , clouser , seaducer. Some of those patterns are in earlier posts.

Re: Looking for some Eastern Ontario Fly rivers

I would suggest bonnechere river eganville to douglas and other stretches. The muskrat river has good wading areas as well. If your looking to pass the winter tying flies and other fly fishing activities Algonkin Fly Fishers are starting up again this fall after the covid hiatus.

Re: gets dark early

This trip I'm fishing the flats of Tampa bay. Later in the spring I have a trip booked for my favourite area the barrier islands of the panhandle. There you have easy access to hundreds of miles of wading. Its fun to fish and explore a new/different environment salt water, tides, and diverse species...

Re: Malone report

I've found the majority of the trout in that size range, with the rainbows average larger and the brookies smaller. Fish story alert, I lost really nice trout, I'm not used to them pulling 30 or 40 ft of line off the reel. I like the way they manage their resource, Catch and release sections or fly ...

Malone report

I was over the border yesterday. I fished several spots on the Salmon river in the Malone area. The water levels/flow still a little high but very fishable and receding. Caught several nice rainbow and brown trout. This trip I persevered with my attempts at euro nymphing. Top fly the Get it Down Pat...

conditions are excellent

Went out this morning for my first wading trip for bass. The conditions on the Mississippi are top notch the water flow, water level, and clarity are ideal for wading. Bonus, the smallies have the feed bag on. 20 plus fish in the 14'' to 16'' range, the big guy managed to snap my 3X tippet. This wil...

did you leave behind a fly fishing outfit

If you left behind your fly fishing outfit on a certain bridge contact me thru this board and you can get it back. It looks like your interested in trying fly fishing, however your rod, reel and line aren't set up properly. I'll spend an hour with you and help with a few pointers.

Crappie are in

The crappie are in at the Rideau locks. I won't have to sing for my supper tomorrow night. I picked up a dozen crappie in about 45 mins. Tip of the day, they weren't actually in the locks, they were after small minnows that are running in the tail race currents. Top fly was the grizzly buggar tied o...

Cheers
Mostly C&R, but I would often keep one for supper. I cooked redfish, pompano, and spotted sea trout. All were good, my favourites were the Sea trout close second were the Pompano.

early start to fly fishing

I'm back from a fantastic fly fishing trip in Florida, just in time for a totally unnecessary late winter storm. I managed to catch Mangrove snapper, Pompano, Crevealle jack, Red drum, Spotted sea trout, Snook, Whiting, Silver perch, Pinfish, Spanish mackerel, Flounder, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Gafftopsa...

Re: Fly fishing trout near Ottawa

Its going to be tough to target trout within 2 hrs and not leave Ontario. I would try for panfish and crappie once the ice goes out of the Rideau locks. They cooperate a lot more than trout, especially for a novice. Smallmouth are also a good option once the season opens, they are a blast on fly gear.

Re: wading boot maintenance

Just pick up some replacement felt soles at your local shop and take them to a shoe repair store and have them replace the felt for you. I used to patronise the Green Drake. They closed shortly after I got outfitted and serious about fly fishing. Is there a dedicated fly shop in eastern Ontario? I ...

Re: Getting Started

I'm new to fly fishing and not close to mentoring resources so I picked up a lot from online tutorials. If your close to ottawa check out Ottawa Flyfishers Society they have programs specifically for beginners, covering all aspects, casting clinics, fly tying, on the water sessions etc.
