Re: Off-season gear-up: looking for advice on baitcasters

Thanks for all of the feedback.

Went to Paddletales on Friday. Picked up a Tatula SV (anti-backlash management is pretty awesome). Almost bought a Zillion. Despite the warm temps and open water, we did not catch anything in the parking lot ;)

Thanks for the time you spent with me Ed!

Re: Off-season gear-up: looking for advice on baitcasters

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think I've narrowed the meatier reel down to:

1) Diawa Tatula SV
2) Shimano Curado K (or 200i?)
3) Abu Garcia Revo SX

I'm going to try to get down to Paddletales on Friday morning and narrow that down to one. Or maybe Ed will have a better alternative ;)

Off-season gear-up: looking for advice on baitcasters

My Christmas bonus came in the form of a pre-paid Visa ($450) so it's time to buy some gear! I've never had a quality baitcaster reel so I'd like to pick up two with a target list price between $200 and $300 each (and then try to find them on sale). Both would be right hand, and I'm not partial to b...

Re: Electronics Upgrade: Lowrance Elite 7 TI ?

Well I pulled the trigger - bought a Simrad GO7 XSE. Here's my take (may not be 100% accurate or complete but thought you might like to know what I found): The Simrad GO7 XSE and Lowrance Elite 7 TI run the same software, that's very clear from the manuals, which are also very similar. But there are...

Re: salt water effect

I fished off the east coast a couple years ago with various rigs. Just rinse the metal parts with tap water shortly after fishing and you'll be fine.

Electronics Upgrade: Lowrance Elite 7 TI ?

I've done some research and found that there are too many options! I have narrowed my target to the Lowrance Elite 7 TI for the following reasons: decent size screen (min 7") close to target budget ~$1000 (absolute max $1500 with NAV+ card + tax) configurable chartplotter / sonar / downscan / o...

Re: Boxing day wishlist

For boxing day I'm hoping that Lowrance will announce that the HDS Gen3 plotter will incorporate the Navionics Live mapping feature, along with built in WiFi and a single transducer that includes structure scan.

You did call it a WISH-list :-)

Obviously, it's still just an article, but this is more than a random source.

Mapping lakes not covered by charts

I am considering a project for this winter to generate maps for GPS combo units (like Lowrance HDS, Hummingbird Combos, etc) for some lakes/rivers within a couple hours of Ottawa (ones I might actually go to ;) Since I don't have any sonar logs (currently I have a Humminbird and a Lowrance but neith...

RJ,

Is that Lund fiberglass?

How does that compare to a similar sized aluminum hull?

Re: Tougher fishing this year?

I'd say its more hit an miss this year. I've had a few days where I had to leave the rod out of the water for a break so I could eat lunch ...but there have been some real stinkers too. Same place, similar conditions, just seems like more variation than in past years. So it may depend on the day you...

Re: Combos for kids (5&8)???

I picked up a pair of combos for my young'uns from Sail for $25 per combo (3 years ago). They are Shakespeare Synergy rods with Titanium Ti6 closed face reals. Still going strong after lots of abuse and they cast real nice too. My youngest (4 at the time) played tug-o-war with a 3lb largemouth and t...

Re: smallmouth #s

We were out last week for pike and could not keep the bass off our lines. Kept changing lures and spots but they seemed to hit anything and anywhere. We did notice that the size was larger than usual for that spot too.

Hope they keep biting next week ;)
