Great fish, but I wonder...
Is it OK to dangle a fish of that size by the jaw? If you're going to release it, shouldn't you get a hand under its belly to support the weight and keep it from thrashing around? I don't know, but it always bothers me when some TV pro does that, too.

Alves worms, available at most general stores and many gas stations in the Valley, are usually fat and lively. I don't use worms much any more, but I've rarely if ever bought worms that turned out to be dead. It's always best to take off the lid and take a look before you buy.

I just Googled Trainyards, because I had only vaguely heard of the place before. I'm disappointed: it seems like a crappy location for an outdoors store, especially if you live in the west end. I doubt I'll ever shop there. It's a short skip off the Queensway and is certainly more accessible than L...

My endless project is restoring my little camp on the Mississippi. I like the work, you can't beat the location, but the temptations are great. Like yesterday, when my son and I went out to get started on one of the many jobs that remain. It was a gorgeous day, there was a room full of fishing tackl...

I keep my son at home so it's easier to get my stuff back.

I've been yak fishing for 15 years or so, just using a standard sit-inside recreational boat (Perception Caspia) with a detachable rod holder for trolling. I find it easier to handle, paddle and position than my canoe, which I rarely use any more. I find the yak holds all the gear you really need, i...

I've got some old rods. reels, spoons and wooden plugs that used to be my dad's and my grandfather's, and some funky old signs and pictures. They will adorn the tiny back room at my camp, right after I get around to finishing it. I doubt any if the old stuff is worth much money.

Sitting on the side of the road? Like left out as garbage? Or left behind by accident? What a great find.

As usual they are going to the wrong side of town. I wonder if they even bother talking to some locals to find out where to go. There is a lot of fishing/hunting stores out west and none out east what are they thinking? Pretty hard to support the local economy when all stores are 35 to 60+ minutes ...

Thanks for that, Jim.
20% of a BPS superstore is still a heap of fishing gear.

Yeah we need another impersonal big box outdoor store in Ottawa. The small shops we have are too friendly and well priced. While I greatly appreciate your cliched view, the fact is we don't have any tackle shop or outdoor store in Kanata. Unless you're talking about friendly, intimate little...

Kanata would be a great location. Lots of local customers, plus for Ottawa folks, its on the way to the Rideaus, the upper Ottawa, the Mississippi, Madawaska and Bonnechere, the Land O' Lakes cottage country, Algonquin Park and the back country of Lanark, Renfrew and Frontenac counties. Yeah we nee...
