Re: Rideau River / Canal fishing?
I also hit the rideau/canal this weekend when I was not not gar fishing. Very, very murky water. My best results were with a texas rigged white yamamoto or a bright spinnerbait. Really light bite and mostly mid to small sized largemouths. One heart stopping moment when a very large pike or a medium ...

Re: First and second Gar!
I am definitely feel confident now. My ratio is about 1 fish for every two takes which I think is really good. My success is a combo of bait, tackle and hook set. Bait and tackle: Half a minnow or smelt, preferably the tail end on a small treble. By hooking it on two of the three barbs you have mini...

Climbing the leaderboard! Caught this 33inch fish this am. 17 inches more and I will be taking on RJ.
Definitely getting the hang of the hookset now. Rod

First and second Gar!
Finally! Thanks to all for the pointers. After many missed fish (including some big ones) my first (during the day on the 22nd) was a modest 32 inches but I was very happy: image.jpeg Also had a bigger one that got off right at the shore. Today I caught this gar about an hour before sunset (fairly s...

Re: How to catch a Gar?
Grrrr..... Garrrrr!!! Went out last night and had one take a long run with my lighted float! Then it dropped it. Today I went to a gar rich shore spot.... Unfortunatly really weedy. 6 confirmed bites. Three drops (tangled in weeds), 2 missed hooksets and one really big boy that caught me off guard w...

How to catch a Gar?
I have really had a hard time getting out this year and so not a lot of posts. Water levels certainly affected me and while I have had great fun with the catfish and moderate pike action I have not yet gone carp fishing.... miss that! However, I fully intend to catch a Gar this year. I know I could ...

Ottawa area shore fishing 2017!
I have not posted too much this spring... not entirely sure why! Catfishing has been spectacular on the Ottawa River. Caught my first fish (which I did post) through gaps in the Ice flows. Lots and lots of really clean, decent sized fish: IMG_1235a.jpg A few days ago I caught a double with two solid...

Full-Metal Catfish!
Okay.... Subject has nothing to do with the post other than the catfish but it sounds hardcore.... And the catfish bite is really hardcore right now. Had almost constant hits after dark last night but the fish were a tad small. This afternoon (2:30 to just a bit ago) went to a different spot with ex...

Re: snags at victoria island
My favourite trick is to use a heavy braid mainline (40 lb), a 50lb flouro leader about 2.5 feet long attached to the main by a 70+ lb rated snap swivel. I have one hook attached at the main/fluoro connection with a short 25lb flouro leader. Terminal end is the heavy weight (I use the bell weights p...

Re: salt water effect
I should mention that when I said to rinse "each trip" I meant after each time you go fishing, or at least that day!

Re: salt water effect
I have taken tackle to/from fresh to salt water frequently. Salt causes no major issues if you rinse off your gear after each trip. Of bigger concern in my experience is sand. Don't put your reel down in a sandy area unless you have to. I surf cast (with dedicated gear... Sealed spinning reels) each...

I met some of the Carleton students tagging muskies a number of years ago (my "reel finger" was twitching like you would not believe)! They have been doing some really good research on the Ottawa are species and ecosystems.
Always nice to see their research!

Re: Fun Night on the Ottawa
Awesome stuff guys! My jealousy drove me out to the same location while the sun was shining early today. Expected nothing but some relaxation but I had four cats within an hour including a net weighed 5 pound fish. Wind picked up, bite dropped off and the sun went behind the clouds so I called it a ...

Re: Spring Catfish countdown!
BINGO! 3:52 pm on April 11th image.jpeg About 10 minutes after I had bait in the water. Naturally I had to sit there for another hour before I got another bite. Two missed fish in a row before I landed one more at 5:30. I really would have liked to stay since the bite appeared to be picking up but t...
