Re: Quebec Reds

That is indeed a very rare fish. You are correct the fish is a landlocked char. It is native to certain deep lakes in Maine, New Hampshire and Quebec. In Maine it is called Blueback trout, Quebec the Red Trout and NH the Sunapee Trout. It is distinguishable by its deeply forked tail and long thin bo...

Re: Trout fishing

Probably just hit up one of the usual spots, at worst I've got some time for beer and relaxation, it's too bad mnr is wasting resources like that, would be better to stock higher numbers in one of the sccessful lakes.I'm sure there's a stream within all those lakes that has my name on it. Stocking ...

Re: Brown Trout

Browns in Algonquin Park would be an invasive species and definite no no. I believe there are browns in Summit Lake near Ompah as well. I have not heard anyone doing very well for them in any Madawaska Highland ponds. It may be because the browns Ontario stock are from the Ganaraska River. T...

RJ, I swear you are on some kind of mission to find and catch the ugliest fish that swims

Ever check out the spring sucker run? Lot's of fun catching 20" suckers in a little creek with Crappie gear and they're ugly too.

Re: Fishing in Quebec

Every little town could use a couple more minimum wage part time jobs. That's about it from fishermen. Where are all these business's that cater to fishermen? I'll tell you who spends $$$. Rich Cottage owners. They create real jobs for local plumbers, electricians, contractors, grocery stores, off s...

Re: Fishing in Quebec

A little blunt but I agree 100%. Countless Brook Trout ponds have been destroyed by the introduction of live bait. Mosque Lake near Ompah was strictly a Lake Trout and Brook Trout water. Brookies over 8lbs. were caught. Yellow Perch got into the lake, likely through a bait bucket and the Brook Trout...

Re: Early, Early Trout Season Tactics

Best way of dealing with leader setup is the old way. Nail knot your leader directly to fly line. When you change leaders leave about 2 ft. of the old leader and cut off 2 ft of the new leader or leave it since its stiff and should turn over fine. If it won't the cut off 2 ft and re-tie to the origi...

Re: float tube question

I was on a pond in the Adirondacks a couple of years back. I was having a real good day but the pair of Loons around me weren't. They dove over and over but never saw them catch a thing. I swear they were jealous and started crowding me and that's when the one buzzed me. Made me feel good putting a ...

Re: Early, Early Trout Season Tactics

Agreed. Forget the streams with trout. They are too small and brushy and many no longer contain any trout. If really want to try then no need to have a bunch of flies. A few weighted nymphs is all you would need. By far the best opportunities are the ponds. You will need some sort of craft to get ou...

Re: float tube question

No problem with Beavers. Never see them out when fishing. Did have a loon go zooming by just under my arse once. I'd worry more about doing something dumb like leaving bug repellent in a side pocket and have it eat a hole in your bladder and have it go Pfftt when on the water.

Re: where's all the trout gone?

Good Brook trout ponds do not have a minnow forage base. Minnows compete with small Brook trout for the same food. Brook trout do just fine on aquatic insects. That is why lakes in Algonquin Park do not allow baitfish. In New York they have outstanding Brook trout ponds that you can drive to but the...

Re: where's all the trout gone?

You will always have mediocre Brook trout fishing with year round fishing and liberal harvest.

Hahaha...yea it was quite the place. I think I paid $10 to stay there one night although the normal fee was only $15. The place never had a lock on the front door.

New Fly Fisher

Recently saw an episode of the NFF where Colin was fishing an Ottawa area river for smallmouth. I don't know the rivers in the area but looked like the Mississippi but not sure where. Anyone else see it? Probably never get up that way to fish it but if I was in the area sometime I might.
