Re: Spring Catfish countdown!

Rod when you say catfish do you actually mean bullhead/barbotte? Ottawa river channel cats! hmmm... April 21st eh, My best is April 23rd. Sounds like we are going for bragging rights. 8) I know a good place to catch them on ice out in the east end but it's too far from my place to just pop over. I ...

Spring Catfish countdown!

I have started the catfish hunt and so far nothing. My goal this year is to beat my April 21st date last year. Gobs of worms at a reliable spot. I am fishing about .5hrs before sunset to about 1hr after right now. Main problem now is the pack ice that seems to come along shore in the evening. No con...

Re: Calabogie ice

Methinks thou mightest be pushing your luck Sir Lumbo! In all seriousness, I imagine their are areas with some solid ice left , but based on the rot I have seen in the past week you might not make it to the solid area. Any areas with current are done and the shorelines are sketchy everywhere. I was ...

Re: Mid March till May what to do?

Actually you do not have to wait that long. Around Ottawa (except the Ottawa river (zone 12)), Pike and Walleye open May 13th this year. May 19th on the Ottawa river. Before that bottom fishing for Catfish and Suckers with worms on the Ottawa river is a blast and I used it fir the first time last ye...

Re: Out like a lion!

Way to go! I saw some posts on Facebook of another group fishing same lake, same entry point as you, and they were nailing the pike too. You certainly did better than our group outing to lake x. Yeah, I saw a group just off the other shallow bay. Pretty sure that the pike are starting to stack up n...

Out like a lion!

Final days of March and hard to believe that in a month I will probably be catching fish without having to haul a ton of gear and drill holes in the water. Last year my first catfish was April 21. Ice is nice but the brute force, hard labour we call Ice Fishing is almost over. Don't get me wrong... ...

Constance Bay Derby!

First of all, great event and lots of FHers out on the Ice. Beautiful day! I am now have an exposure (cold/sun) burn and because I wore a balaclava, my wife thinks it looks like someone spray-painted a red circle on my face  Despite the fact that this was a Pike derby (due to the walleye slot ...

Re: Soggy Shirleys Bay and at last a Ling!

Makes me smile to read about first ling AND about using the BiteMinder! Rod - was it big enough to keep? Just at the edge of eating size but I just couldn't bring myself to eat him being my first ling! Light hookset so he was off to grow huge. After all the positive reviews on the taste next one wi...

Soggy Shirleys Bay and at last a Ling!

Was out on Shirley's Bay Friday evening. Slick and wet. The shacks are coming down fast. Any open holes are getting pretty big but still a lot of Ice. There was only myself and one other group fishing and someone dismantling a shack in the distance. I should be writing all of the above in three week...

Re: NILS Ice Auger - This baby rocks

A drill is the way to go, lighter, no gas to mix. About as much effort as turning on a light swith and cuts through 20 inches of ice in seconds. Sold my 10" jiffyvand 8 inch manual auger. Bought a Finbore 3 and a Milwaukee drill with 1200 lds of torque and a clam drill plate. Sooooo slick. Eve...
