This is to all fellow pike hunters, and to you fisher men
and
women who have never been on the receiving end of 20 plus pike.I read
the article on the top 5 pike lakes, but I did not see Lake of the
Woods. If anybody is looking for monster pike action, that is the place
to go! Wether your a beginner or a novice fisherperson, anybody can pull
a quality pike from the ice up on that lake!
The basic technique is to wait until late season, normally mid to
late February into March, depending on the stability of the ice. Second,
have good equipment. Equip yourself with three or four polar
tip ups, two to fish with, two for reserve. Spool them with at least
25lbs Spider Wire or Tuff Line. The reason I recommend those lines
is because they will not burn your fingers if a monster decides to take
his typical two to three
runs. Next use a 40 to 45 lbs titanium leader or a coated leader to
avoid krimping. Or find a good quick strike rig that houses TWO EVENLY
LENGTHED TREBLE HOOKS, This is very important for your bait to hang
level when in the water - one hook behind the head, the other behind the
dorsal fin. Also make sure to use a spinner on the leader - its the
LAW!
Last but not least, the BAIT. Go to your local grocery store,
yes, the grocery store, and pick the biggest smelt you can find,
preferably 8 to 10 inches. Before you use them, make sure to thaw them
so they are really stinky, the water on the big lake is so murky that
they have to hunt by sense of smell and sight, but make sure not to
scratch your nose. I'm speaking from experience. It ain't worth
it!!
Its not that expensive to get set up to do this, and it is well
worth it, get ready for a treat!!! |
