Fly Swap #3 - Favourite Bass Surface Fly

Are you a fly fisherman who like to swap flies with others? This idea was brought to my attention a little while back and I think we should give it a try.

Fly Swap #3 - Favourite Bass Surface Fly

Post by Salar »

Hi Everyone,

The theme for the third Fish-Hawk fly swap will be “Your Favourite Bass Surface Fly.” If you're interested in participating, send me PM with the pattern that you will be tying. Please try to limit the fly size so it's castable on a 6wt rod or less.

In record setting time we've filled all 10 spots for this swap. I guess it's a popular theme :). I'll send out the details about where to send the flies for the March 3rd deadline.

Thanks everyone for signing up.

Cheers,

Salar.

All the flies have been received. The flies look great. The bass don't stand a chance this summer :D

I'll contact everyone to make arrangements for the pickup / delivery of the flies. In the meantime, check out the photos and recipes above.

Thank you everyone for participating in the swap.

Cheers,

Salar.

Paul,

Another great effort on your part for putting the swap together and posting all the photos and patterns. The flies look really great, I already have my 8wt strung up and I'm ready to go....unfortunately it's still 3 months to go

Cheers,

Stephan,

Who says you have to wait for 3 months. A few of the flies are big enough for pike and I know one is actually for big Browns but bass don't care. ;-)

Instructions for the Gartside Gurgler from uberfish:
  • Tie in tail material (bucktail about length of hook)
  • Bind down butts of tail about 2/3 of hook and snip at angle
  • Wind thread back to bend
  • Tie in grizzly hackle by tip
  • Coat body with CA glue
  • Lay foam strip over body (leave a space behind eye for tying off hackle)
  • Cup foam strip around shank and bind down with 2 or 3 wraps
  • Spiral thread forward and wrap down front edge of foam strip
  • Palmer the grizzly hackle along the thread indents, tie and trim excess
  • Tie in red hackle by tip, 2 or 3 wraps and tie off/trim
  • Fold foam over like shell back and tie off with 3 or 4 firm wraps
  • Whip finish head and trim foam to desired length of lip.
