Fly Swap #5 - "Go To Trout Flies"

Are you a fly fisherman who like to swap flies with others? This idea was brought to my attention a little while back and I think we should give it a try.

Fly Swap #5 - "Go To Trout Flies"

Post by Todd B. »

Well it's time to kick off the tying season!

If you're interested in participating, send me PM with the pattern that you will be tying and I will reply with the additional details (see fly swap FAQ) and update the tier list.

Swap Theme: "Go To Trout Flies" - Flies you'd never leave home without.
Sign-up Deadline: closed
Fly Submission Deadline: Dec 15th
Swapmeister: Todd B.

Hamill's Killer
Image
(by Todd Bealor)

Hook: Standard 3X streamer (Mustad 9672)
Tail: Black Squirel Tail topped with Golden Pheasant Tippet
Body: Red chenille (size 0)
Wings: 2 pairs of Mallard Flank feathers, mounted on each side.
Head: Build up thread, coated with enamel.
Notes: Teal Flank feathers have better markings, however it can be difficult to obtain quality feathers that lend themselves to tying this fly.

Thread: Black 6/0
Tail: Black squirrel, flanked by two pheasant 'semi-church' feathers
Rear Body: Red chenille
Middle Body: Two pheasant 'semi-church' feathers
Front Body: Red chenille
Front Feathers: Four pheasant 'semi-church' feathers

Micro Leech

Hook[/b: Size 8 wet nymph
Thread: 6/0 black
Material : Marabou (tie a pinch at the back, and a pinch at the front)
Notes: Fish it using the wet fly swing. Cast it out and let it drift downstream past you, dont' follow with your rod tip for a faster swing.

Egg Sucking Leech

(by beachburger)

Hook : Size 6 or 8 Mustad 9672 or Mustad 79580
Tail : Purple marabou + 2 strands pearl blue krystal flash folded over
Body : Purple krystal flash chenille
Hackle : Purple saddle hackle
Head : Red chenille

Lite Brite Stone

(by wongrs)

Weight: non-lead wrap
Tail: Brown Biots
Abdomen: Pearl Core Braid
Thorax: Ice Dub (most colours work)
Wing Case: Goose Feather (flash back works also)
Legs: Brown (Yellow barred ideal)

Suggested Use: Fast moving water such as fast runs and/or riffles. The flash and size of the fly catches the attention of the fish. Fish in faster water have a limited time to decide. I usually high stick nymph as the first fly with a mayfly nymph dropper.

should we be tying 1 or 2 for each participant? the reason for 2 is that one is for fishing and the other for reference.

Two each sounds good. I'm still trying to get one more person into the swap, but as it stands now with two files, everyone would be tying 10 flies.

Not a problem. For anyone attending this Tuesday's OFS fly tying night you can drop your flies off then if you like, otherwise let me know so I can make arrangements.

Cheers,
Todd

**Also I meant to say when you want a faster swing, dont follow it with your rod tip. Nice ties everyone.
