I watched a duck hunting show today .It was a January hunt with a retreiver. It got me thinking ( I don't have a dog):
1- Do you change the food to prepare the dog to have extra insulation?
2- How do you keep the dog from freezing having to go in and out of the frigid water ?(there was ice formed on shore for a few feet).

Keeping warm
If you can keep em outside, the put on a better coat, then they do need more food in order to have the calories needed to keep warm, and lastly a neoprene vest keeps their vitals warm, which keeps them warm and working.
