Toronto Area Turkey numbers

Post by tofisherman »

I have been hunting Turkeys in the GTA now going on seven years and I haven't seen what appears to be this low of numbers.

Three years ago it wasn't uncommon to see 50 plus birds in a winter flock on an exposed field after a melt. This year the largest number of birds I have come across regularly is approximately 20 birds. Is it just me or are others seeing the same thing?

With the past two wet springs and two seasons of heavy snow there appears to be a layman’s view of a drop in Population. Last year I saw a lot of Jakes but not many quality gobblers strutting their stuff.

Anybody else in the area have these feelings?

Everything else aside, two months to go for the big day: Monday, April 27, 2009.

The last 2 winters have been hard on the deer and turkey's period.

Yes, there are still big bucks and big tom's walking around.
But the mortality for young poults and jakes was probably quite high.

I have seen alot of turkeys my way in the Lanark area.

In that case I guess I can only wish I was still a studen at Carleton and not living in the Toronto area.

LOL!

You may need to travel a bit. A buddy of mine says Collingwood is AWSOME for turkey!
