May/June 2009 issue, on page 23.

"Turkey Population Growing in Quebec"

Wild turkeys have been sighted in Québec province since the mid-1970s. The first birds migrated from New York and later Vermont and Ontario. Birds from Ontario were trapped and released north of the Otttawa River by the Collines Chapter of the NWTF.

The May 2008 Quebec wild turkey hunt was a success, with 548 bearded turkeys harvested. That's a 25 percent success rate for the 2,277 permit-holding hunters, following three experimental spring hunts in the Montérégie Region south of Montréal with a nearly 30 per cent success rate. The 2009 season should be just as good. The birds are multiplying.

The Québec Hunters and Fishers Federation and the NWTF, who continue to work with the Québec wildlife authorities, produced a French-language manual on the biology and management of wild turkeys, including compulsory courses for would-be turkey hunters. --- Harry gow, NWTF Collines Chapter"
