Feb Eiders

Post by franklauzon »

Left for N.B at 3am February 3rd and arrived at the hotel about supper time that night after picking up our licenses.

It was a short night by the time we got our gear un packed and ready for the morning! The alarm sounded at 4am Atlantic time and we were off by 4:45am headed for the ferry to Deer Island N.B.

After a short wait for the ferry and a 20 minute ride we were taken the cover off the boat and getting it launched and ready to go. We were set up just about legal shooting time and ready to rip as the birds started to fly.

There was a fair number of birds moving around our area and a few dropping into see us and a few staying with us. We decided to pack it in around 11:30am the first day and head back to the hotel and a buddy's place.

After some dinner and a guided tour of a Salmon fishery we were looking for a little nap time. Again back up on Friday morning and headed back to the Island to see what we could find at a new location we watched the day before.

After arriving we realized the seas were too high to launch for first light so we spent the morning driving around scouting other areas with not a whole lot of luck. Stopped at a little restaurant for lunch and then back to the Island to try and get out for the afternoon and to our surprise the seas had laid down nicely so off we go headed to a spot were the birds seemed to want to play during the incoming tide as the tides had just changed.

Got all set up and was loading the gun when they started to come and play. After a fast and furious go for a few minutes a couple of us were back in the boat and picking up birds and chasing a cripple or 2. The afternoon ended about 4:30pm Atlantic and we were off on the ferry back to the hotel for some BBQ venison and some shut eye.

After finishing the packing of the truck on Sat. morning we were headed back to the ferry at 5am for a quick hunt before starting the trip back to Ontario. Well the hunt went well with fairly quite seas and being set up before daybreak. We had birds decoying a few minutes after light and then things settled down for a hour or so. We then got another small burst of action and then decided it was time to head out.

We packed up and headed to the launch, loaded the boat and caught the ferry back to the main land. We ended up leaving the landing at 11:30 am headed for home, after a few stops for gas, washroom breaks and food we ended our trip at midnight back at home.

Here is a few pics of the trip.

Sounds like you had a great time chasing sea birds.

Can't wait to get home so I can see the pics.
