First turkey!

Post by Super »

Just got back from my first turkey hunt.
As I posted earlier, this was my first hunt so I hooked up with Double D Guide Service in North Augusta.
Garry was great with lots of information and this was great because I needed it.
He had been successful in the field we ended up in, on Monday morning, but he had seen turkeys in it last night.
So he had done the scouting part for me
This morning we headed out at 4:45.
He prefers that his hunters use one of the blinds he has set up. This was much better (had a chair) than sitting on the ground, I am sure.
Also it is more forgiving if you tend to move around a bit because the turkeys cannot see you.
Garry left me in the blind alone and told me to only call the birds once they were on the ground.
He went 200 yards down the field and hid there.
We were set up by 5:00 and hunting started at 5:25 today.
His first cluck was replied to with a gobble that was the loudest noise I have ever heard in the bush, so we knew the birds were in the bush where he thought they would be.
He repeated this every 7 minutes.
They finally flew down to the field, 3 hens and 2 jakes half way between us. Garry had said he would stop calling once they were in the field.
I obvoiuly made the correct chirps because they slowly made their way down to my one decoy (I was worried that I would scare them away)
But the the two jakes were walking together so I could not get a shot.
Finally one moved far enough away so I could get a safe shot at just one.
BANG... first turkey for me.
We had radios, set on low volume and Garry called me and said to stay in the blind untill all birds had left the field. The remaining live jake was still calling his buddy but finally took off.
This should mean that the field will be good for that last Jake in a couple of days again.
Great hunt, lots of knowledge picked up, and Garry cleaned the bird.
This was great for me.
Jake was a 12 pounder but good enough to make me happy!!!!
I"ll try and post picture tomorrow
