Ole boss hen sealed the deal

Post by Out4trout »

An interesting hunt this afternoon after work. Went to my spot, made a few yelps and waited... just the breeze rustling leaves in reply. After about 1/2 hour, boss hen started yelping... then she went into full frenzy, yelping and cutting, and moving into my set. In the distance a Tom gobbled in reply... :handgestures-thumbupright:

Just when she would shut up for a second, I would give her another cluck on the mouth call, and the ruckus would repeat. Eventually she was 20yds from me, cussing up a storm at my dekes for their poor imitation of her perfect yelps, and all the while, the Tom is moving closer... until finally he was in sight. Fantastic bird, definitely the game was on at that point.

Two fake hens, and one real one, (real yappy too) he approached with total confidence, at full strut. The boss hen poked her way west, with Tom following her. At 30yds I clucked once, his head came up, Boom, lights out. Stats... 9" beard, 3/4' spurs

Was a great hunt, got to enjoy watching him strut for a while, and that ole hen sure helped seal the deal. 8-)

Nice! Gotta love it when a plan comes together. It's fun when you get the hens fired up lol.

He give you any gobbles or did he stay silent?

Thanks for the comments folks, turkey hunting is a hunt I look fwd to each year, very interactive.
I've found that no two hunts are quite alike, every successful hunt etched into memory as another unique experience.

He gobbled periodically on the way to the clearing, but was quiet & strutting once he saw the hen.
Sure enjoy hearing the gobbling on approach, gets the adrenaline pumping.
