Name that poop!

Post by lapointeric »

We were in Algonquin Park this weekend and we came across this (just off our site)

Image

It looks like a dog poop, consisting almost completely of hair, so naturally we're guessing wolf/coywolf scat?

For those that were interested, I posted this to an Algonquin Facebook page, and the overwhelming conclusion was wolf. Specifically, Eastern Wolves.

Coyote , wolf or hybrid coywolf.

You would recognize if it was bear crap if it had "hikers safety bells" in it.

Are people still believing that there are 100% purebred Eastern Wolves in Algonquin Park?

From what I understand, even the MNR Biologists have conceded that there is no such thing as a pure Eastern Wolf anymore based on scientific data they have collected.

Read Farley Mowat's Never Cry Wolf ?
He was a bit surprised that a wolf's diet mainly consists of mice.
Now were they house mice, deer mice , voles ... ?

Came across the exact same looking scat in the woods by centrum in Kanata when walking the dog about a week ago. I know there is a pack of coyotes around, you can hear them at night and my buddy took a picture of one. I would highly doubt it was wolf in Kanata but it could be in your case. Anyone know if they are any noticeable difference between coyote scat and wolf scat? I'm guessing it would be pretty similar and all depend on diet but I really don't know much about it.

My family owns some sizeable hunting acreage.

I've seen all kinds of scat all over the place walking the bush.

Bear, deer, coyote, turkey, skunk, raccoon etc etc.

Here's the full thread.

You'll notice I ask if it's coyote or even coywolf.

The guy who replies with the link and says it's an eastern wolf (Steve) is the admin of the group.

It's definately not an oel pellet.

It's pretty much impossible to tell if that's wolf or coyote, so I think "cannine" is likely the best answer given.
