Broadheads??

Postby qcconnection » Sat Jul 23, 2016 3:24 pm

Just got into archery hunting. Picked up a nice used Martin bow.

What`s everyone using for broadheads? Fixed or Mech?

I like the devastation that the popular mechanized heads seem to do, but would prefer the reliability of a fixed blade.

Any experiences or brands to stay away from, pros, cons, let `er rip!!

I am a Thunder Head man and Muzzy but they all do the job if put in the boiler.

Pretty much 110 grain or 120 gr but don't mix as they will shoot different.

So, here`s the skinny!!

Shot a few different heads the last little while.

I`m shooting a Martin MOAB Pro Hunter at 60 pounds, 30 inch draw, CX Maxima Red arrows.

I shot the 2 blade rages, and was impressed, but not wowed.

I shot 3 blade G5 T3`s and was impressed with their accuracy.

The winner though, will be the G5 Montec. Crazy surprised with the groups and shots from different distances. 100 grain head.

This is at 15 yards. On the left is a field point, on the right is the Montec.

This is at 20 yards. Took a few practice shots with the same arrow and head ( only used one ).

And, here`s the 25 yarder... Again, field point is on the left, Montec is right on the money!!

I`ve made my choice!! Montec all the way. Hopefully going to sail one of these through a moose in 3 weeks, and a White tail or Black bear in 2 weeks!!

Good luck with it. Archery sure is a different buzz from rifle hunting, in a good way too. Margin of error is mighty limited though, mistakes are usually costly.
I hope it cools down for you this year. The heat last year was brutal.

Cheers

Thanks Smitty!!
We'll see what happens. I'm fairly confident in my gear, but there's an awful difference between shooting a foam target in your back yard and shooting an animal on its home turf!

Looking forward to the challenge.

Cheers fellas.

Just finishing my first weekend of bow hunting.

Man, what a rush.

Having worked a night shift Friday night, I slept for about half the day yesterday.

On the way via quad to my stand in the afternoon, saw 2 small bucks but both were well out of range. The evening brought 2 doe's and a spike to about 45 yards, which is a little further than I'm comfortable shooting.

Sunday morning, saw 2 deer at my stand, and amazingly, 11 others in various spots, including a 6 pointer.

About an hour ago, I returned to where I saw the 6. It's a cut hay field with round bails still in it. Sprayed down with scent killer, had the wind in my face and started sneaking between bails. Soon enough, I can see a familiar brown back adjacent to a round bale.

I kept the bale angled between the deer and myself, hiding us both from each other's view. Soon enough, I was within what I felt was reasonable range and took out the range finder. As I got the deer's body in the viewing lens, it lifted its head. It was the 6 I spotted earlier in the morning.

I had managed to get within 25 yards of him on my first bow stalk. I drew my bow. He turned broadside and looked through me. Had my 25 yard pin right on the money spot. I realized, that if I took this deer, my season would be over.

He walked away at a trot and started grunting.

Why let him walk?

What the hell else am I going to do with 2 weeks of vacation in November??

Sounds like the deer are out.
In my area the archery season opens Oct 1. I sure am looking forward to putting some time in the woods. So far, only Does on the trail cams, and no Doe Tag. Might have to wait for the rut.
Good luck.
