Costco 13'4" Equinox fishing Kayak

Post by Tonyb »

Just came back from Costco and saw a fishing kayak, April 25/2014
Costco 13'4" Equinox fishing Kayak for $389.00 Sound too good to be true???
Anyone know anything about this boat?

I am new to kayak fishing, want to start this year, looking for skinny water to attack.

Thanks for any input.

I found that on line as well, but I can't find anything from anyone about their actual feel, functionabliity, stability, strength etc. Does anyone have one of these? How do you like it?

I do not own one, but based on the look of the seat, I would stay away from it unless you have a cottage and plan on using it 2 hours at a time. A comfortable (unfortunately expensive) seat is the only way to go. My stock pelican seat looked all too similar. I'm 31 and healthy and my back and butt couldn't take it anymore. I had to upgrade.
This year I spent most of my money on beer, women and fishing...the rest I wasted.

I bought a seat upgrade at sail for my pelican.... its better than the stock seat but instead of lasting 2 hours, now I last 3-3.5.... and the next day something different hurts...

I guess I shouldn't complain because I paid 400$ for my kayak and paddle on super sale and 49.99 down from 69.99 for the seat upgrade...The seat straps into the available hooks on the pelican.

The seat upgrade has rod holders and everything... its definitely worth the 50$ but it was the last one at sail. Maybe they will get more next summer. The trick is to paddle and fish on your way to your favorite island or unreachable shore fishing spot. Every hour you get off the kayak, chew on some sunflower seeds and cast for 30 mins from shore... It really spares your back... If you want a kayak with an all day seat, you will pay over 1000$ based on my research...

I was considering buying a kayak for use where a boat is impractical or there is no launch. I WAS going to get one of the $400-$500 ones, but your info on the uncomfortable seat changed my mind. I would be spending 4-5 hours at a time in the boat and already have an iffy back from car and ski accidents....not happening.

There is just no substitute for quality. "Poor man pays twice" my old man used to say. Better to buy quality up front than go cheap and hope it works out. Never does.

Cheers,

I find prolonged hours of standing on a boat starts to hurt my back.

I realize you get sore from sitting too long also.

I have never felt particularly stable in kayaks or canoes and gennrally have stayed away from them.

I have a 10ft jon boat I like to use instead.

I can sit, stand etc and it isnt too heavy. I can put a 6hp Johnson I have on the back if I want to.

My Pops is considering shelling out good $$$ for a sea kayak for the intercoastal fishing he does in Florida. But so far he too finds that the majority of seats seem to be a bit :? and he is 70 after all.

Just a heads up for anyone considering the Costco 13.4 ft kayak. The store in Kanata has them on sale today for 299.97. Generally, the "97" signals a one day price reduction.

If you want to get into kayaking on the cheap, today is the day to do it.

BTW, I have one of these kayaks and though they aren't Cadillacs, you cannot beat the price and they are a lot of fun.

Sail has a nice entry level fishing kayak for sale at a great price!! I bought one last year and fished some small lakes for largemouth with it. It was pretty windy that day but cut through the waves like butter. I cant remember the name of it but its 12 feet long. I think its around 350.00 right its a old town kayak.
