Thanks to Fish-Hawk and Bobber for a Great Weekend!

Post by ClementClan »

We've been visiting this website for two years and finally registered online earlier this year. Being new at walleye fishing, we were anxious to meet more experienced fishermen and learn from them. We were quite embarrassed to bring our little boat and motor because we were aware that it wasn't big enough to get us out past the cement factory quickly, let alone go as far as you guys did!

Many thanks to Fish-Hawk and Bobber for taking us out on their boats. We certainly enjoyed ourselves! Even though we didn't get to spend the entire day out on the water like some of the rest of you guys, we were fortunate and thankful for having had the chance at all and we learned some valuable lessons. We got to watch Fish-Hawk learn how to use planer boards and actually succeed in catching fish! We really enjoyed the seminars and want to thank all who prepared the great food. We certainly can't complain about anything. Mike (Clem0076) and Steve (Obsessed Angler) are really hooked on walleye fishing now ... not to mention fast boats! As for me, I'm still learning and enjoy just being out on the water. If I catch anything, I get excited ... if I don't .... well, we just won't go there!

This site has brought together a great bunch of people who have at least one thing in common .... you all enjoy (or should I say are obsessed) with fishing. This is just what we were looking for. Hopefully you will allow us to become part of this group as well, even if we are the newbies and we look forward to chatting with you (and learning from you) over the next year.

We hope to get the opportunity to do this again. Hopefully next time we will have a bigger motor and be able to keep up with you guys!

The time and effort Fish-Hawk and Bobber put into this website and organizing these great weekends is tremendous and we want to thank them for all their hard work and dedication.

Cheers!

Well, I would like to get this thread back to its intended purpose, to share the experiences of hawktawkers who attended a great weekend of fishing on the Bay of Quinty

WEDNESDAY-

My weekend started early as Big-O and I hooked up with John at Tim Hortons in Embrun at 5:30 am Wednesday to head for the bay .we launched at the Glenora Ferry ,prospects were looking up as I cicled in the bay waiting for Big-O to launch John and park his car I was marking a huge cloud of bait fish with plenty hooks around it  . Well I swung in and picked up Phil and we headed for the gap this was to be a first experiance with trolling with my boat and we hastily installed 4 rod holders . We got set up and started our troll after going 2 for 2 (27.75 and 26 inches) my motor stated to miss and act up  we decided to head back to the ferry and check it out. Well all the way back to the launch we were running on one or two cylinders and every once in a while the third would kick in by the time we reached the launch all three cylinders were firing and everything seemed fine. We met up with Roughrider, Grumpy and Ontario dreaming at the launch after we checked everything out and all seemed ok we concluded that the problem had been a low battery and the fuel injection system acting up

We decided all was ok and headed back out only to have the weather really blow up and force us to pack it in with winds gusting to 80 KM/hr it took us a good 2 hours to make it back to the ferry and while it was a wet uncomfortable trip I can’t say I was overly worried although some of those waves coming over the bow were a little scary   , oh yes during this trolling experriance those rod holders I had hurriedly installed were all ripped out :x

THURSDAY

Thursday morning 6 am found Big-O and I at Tim Hortons hoping to find a contractor type guy that might have some longer screws to repair the rod holders without waiting for the stores to open , well we go through the drive thru and who do we see but BTS , he didn’t know how to get to Merland Park so he figured if he waited at a Tim Hortons long enough Big-O would show up sooner or later. Well we managed to get some hex head roofing screws from a contractor so off we went ,after dropping BTS off at Merland park and borrowing a wrench from Wig we headed off to repair the boat and get launched. It was nearly 9:30 by the time we got launched . we again set the lines and get stated on our troll. After getting two to the boat (26 and 27 inches ) the motor starts to miss again   . We start to pull in the lines and get the third of the morning as we are bringing them in a fat 28 incher. Well that kills the day for us , I am discouraged and ready to call it a trip :!: but thankfully Big-O keeps after me and convinces me to find a Merc dealer to look at the motor .

Well we end up at Ultimate Power sports in Bellville , they agreed to have a look at the motor ans see if they could get us back on the water ,The mechanic, checked out the motor and quickly located the problem (of course it ran great when he stated it)Water in the fuel , well we drained the tank, added some gas line anti-freeze re-fueled and were set to try again we decided it was to late by the time we got back and opted to get everything set and ready for a early start the next morning. My thanks go out to Ultimate Power Sports and Jim the Mechanic for fitting us in and taking care of us right away , thanks for the great service :D

FRIDAY

Friday we were up bright an early ,the forcast called for great weather and we figured this had to be the day , Phil started the day with a couple of smaller ones

I then got my personal best 29.5 inches 9lbs 11oz
Image
some more for the day :D
Image
Image
Image
8lb 4oz sheephead
Image
13lb 6 oz sheephead
Image

total for the day 9 walleye and 4 sheephead and had to get off at 4 pm to get over to merland park to get dinner ready

Saturday

Saturday we had decided we would fish till noon then we would have to head in to get the turkeys ready for dinner , we hit the water early and quickley got in to fish going three for three on the first troll however we wern't able to locate the fish again after that . only managing 2 sheephead after that by 11 am i had had enough and packed it in

all told for the trip was 17 walleye and 6 sheephead my thanks to everyone involved in organizing the trip and especially to roughrider for including us in his rental for wednesday and thursday, and to Phil for convincing me to get the boat checked out , sorry to pull you off the water early on Saturday

I again met a bunch of new hawktawkers and I wouldn't even attemp to name them all, but as always a great bunch of people

As promised, here are a few pics that I managed to take from this outstanding week-end of walleye fishing.

It was a pleasure to fish with Lise and Mike Clement and especially to help them catch their personal bests when it comes to walleye.

Here's Lise with the first fish that we got in the boat on Friday morning...

Image

Here's Mike with the second fish we managed to get in the boat on Friday morning...

Image

Finally it was my turn to reel one in and get it in the boat for a picture...

I don't know what to say about the rumours going around other than it hurts to have that group of 50 anglers painted in such a bad light. To a person I doubt there is anyone more concerned about the future of the resource. I can't add more to this than what has already been said other than I think it is a shame that a black cloud has been hung over what was otherwise a spectacular week-end of fishing. Very spectacular. Outstanding.

Well nothing thrills me more to see a group of people all come together, get along so well, catch fish, and share experiences and knowledge with each other. I would like to thank each and every one of you who attended, which made this weekend a huge success. We had a few little unforseen hiccups in the execution of the organizing plans, but that is to be expected though. Even with those little hiccups, I did not hear any complaints from anyone. I thank you for that as well.

Steve, it was a pleasure to fish with you. While we didn't necessarily have as much experience and gear as others did, we still caught fish and more importantly, learned a heck of a lot from the other more experienced "big water" fishermen. This is really what it's all about.

Finally I would like to thank MT. Livewell, Big-O, Jazzman, Top Water, Missus Livewell, and Birdie for all their help with the meals and cleanup. You folks rock. Eye Tracker put on a fantastic seminar and of course Big Jim wowed us all once again with his experience and tips for catching all sorts of species of fish. I trust everyone had a great time and I look forward to planning for next year.

One final comment regarding catch and release.

I understand that there are many passionate people when it comes to this subject. I agree with them.

I also understand that there are many who get out once a year to catch some nice eyes as a special treat. I also agree with them.

I also know that each and every person who is involved with Fish-Hawk.Net on a regular basis is equally concerned and aware of our fisheries and the sensitivity of it. In speaking with the 50 anglers this weekend, I will tell you that I was very pleased with the sensitivity and behaviour of our fellow anglers when it comes to catch and release. I can guarantee there was no abuse of our fisheries this weekend. Some fish were kept, yes, but there were far more released, unharmed, back into the water.

Let's not mis-interpret the questions surrounding this subject, and move on, realizing that we are all aware and sensitive to the need for catch and release, however there is nothing at all wrong with a keep thrown in there once in a while, as long as it it within the regulations.

I keep 1 or 2 fish a year. It happens to be Walleye. My wife and I love the treat we get from doing one up on the BBQ. I thought she deserved a little treat this weekend, so I brought one home for her.

WOW!!!!!!!!! What a great trip :D , Topwater has covered the events well so I’ll just add a few things. First of all it was great to spend four days with some of the best guys you would ever want meet, Roughrider, it was great seeing you again and I can’t wait till the end of November when we do it again. :D It was great to finally meet Ontario Dreaming, we were going to meet at Charleston this summer, but that’s when old Blue broke down and I couldn’t make the trip :( , this made, this meeting all the better :D , I was glad to see Ontario Dreaming catch his Personal best Walleye it was a treat to listen to the story. I and got to meet Grumpy, I must admit his name threw me off, when we met shook hands, a pleasant talk, I could not under stand how he got his name, until we got him up a 5:00 am  , Just kidding  , I good time sitting up with you at night discussing every thing under the sun, he also gave me some great bass tips, and I was glad that Roughrider showed him that there were other fish swimming in the waters other than Bass  . John sorry that you had that major problem with your boat, I really hope that legend comes threw for you, and ether replaces the hull of they fix it. But in the short time you had on the Water you managed to catch and release a pile of Quality fish :D . This was the second time I made the trip to Quinte with out my boat, last year I spent a few days with Roughrider and his brother, on Quinte last Fall and this year we tested the waters with Topwaters new ride, and let me tell you with the exception a few minor problems his boat preformed great, It handle the worst weather and water conditions I’ve ever been in and got us back to the launch running on one of his three cylinders  … to me he could not have chosen a better boat, thanks for the ride Mike. :D
As far as the allegations made about Fish-Hawkers keeping and cleaning piles trophy fish, well it is not worth commenting on….so I won’t!
There were so many people old friends and new ones I won’t try to name them all, in case of forgetting someone. It was great time listing to Turkeymans Stories, I wish I was there to see him and Hoss  at the card Game, I must mention that Turkey Mans down rigger set up, that he made is great, good seeing you and Brenda again Bud
I want to thank Jazz and M.T. livewell for there help, cooking almost 80 LBS of turkey and I don’t know how many lbs of Fries  , is not a easy job, Topwater and I started a noon to have the birds ready for the 6:00Pm supper time, but it was fun, although I don’t think we will do it again, we were glad every one enjoyed it!

Here are a few more pics to add to the collection

What a great weekend, But I wouldn't have expected it to be anything but great as it was a Fish-Hawk Adventure. Good to see familiar faces and meet some new ones.

It was the best Walleye fishing I have ever experienced. But then again when you get to fish with a guy named Wall-I-Guy you know it's going to be great. Thanks again WIG!!!!!!!!!!

Our room they called THE LOFT was a cozy little spot. Although it was brought up in a couple conversations that because of our combined ages it was a little cruel to put us up there. { About a mile from the fire pit and 27 flights of stairs. This did seem to take its toll on Skooter especially!!!}

Thanks to all who had a part in putting this weekend on.

What an awesome weekend! Was great to get out on the water with my father-in-law (RJsr). We had a great Friday fish, actually it was kinda scary how calm the water was. Just wish all of our pics would have turned out, but here are the ones that did:

First fish of the day (after being out for 3 & 1/2 hours without a sniff

Then my turn

And finally RJsr's best side

On Friday we went 8 for 9, the ninth snapped the line and we lost our bait!   We headed out again on Saturday, not that I remember it much as I spent most of the morning napping in the boat! We did manage another 3 in very tough conditions. So the final total was 11 for 12. The smallest fish was 23" or biggest was 29". Thanks to Eye-Tracker for all his advice (it paid off once again), RJ & Birdee for being such good bunkmates, Big-O, Topwater, Jazz and MT for all their hard work preparing the food, and to Fishhawk and Bobber for pulling this all together. I would thank RJsr but he snored way too much each night!  :D :D :D :D

Finally back to work (took Monday off to recoup), so that means I finally have some free time. :D

The Misses and I took off a little later than I had hoped on Thursday. And, we also stopped to pick up a couple of survival suits (best money I've ever spent). We arrived at Merlands around 3pm, itchin' to go, we drop the boat in the water and parked the van. Well SOB  , dead cranking battery. So, after kicking around this and breaking that, RJ hooked me up to his cranker just to confirm. So, instead of fishing, it was a run to CT. No fishing for us Thursday, but a great chance to catch up with the old, and meet new friends.
Thanks so much to Turkeyman and Brenda for cooking up some of those yummy fillets.

Friday morning, the rest of my crew arrived. FishForFun showed up with 2 XL triple triples for me and the Misses. We crammed our gear into the VIP, a good crank from the battery, and off we headed for the light-house. Didn't take us long to set up. My only Dr Death was on the right hand planar board. Set up the riggers and the other board with whatever lures we had left that looked good (no deep divers).
First hit, lost the Dr D and the planar board because the board slid over the mono leader I had put on. Dr D and planar board were gone. :(
FishForFun reached into his box and said, I have one manns lure ... well what do ya know ... another Dr D.

Shortly there after, the planar board fell behind the boat. We weren't real sure if it was a fish or not, so I grabbed the rod and handed it to Misses Livewell. She reeled and reeled and reeled. Fighting the planar board, and not knowing what to expect, she handed the rod back to me saying "I don't think there is a fish on here".
Well, low and behold, there was ...
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/ ... 005/MT.jpg">

A little while later, on the same Dr D, FishForFun finds his way into the rod rotation. When the walleye hit the lure, it got the front trebles in the top lip and rear trebles in the bottom lip, making this fish ornery and a real fighter. After what seemed like forever, Martin muscled this pretty fish into the net.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/ ... ForFun.jpg">
FishForfun in action ............. A pose that would make Hoover proud

It was getting late into the afternoon. The sun had come out and the wind nearly died. It was hard to believe it was mid-October. And not what you might call ideal walleye conditions. Misses Livewell seemed convinced there would be no fish for her this day. Well, the Dr D paid off one last time. Misses Livewell stepped up to the rod and worked it like a pro. And managed the biggest fish in our boat on Friday.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/ ... vewell.jpg">

I won't speak much more to the fishing as that was all we caught this trip. Wishing Eye-Tracker had opened up the shop earlier because it was painfully obvious we were ill equip on Friday. Drop a ton of dough getting ready for Saturday, but the winds blew up and the Misses turned green. We did miss a nice hit, but it was too rough to stay out for long less I wanted to pressure wash the floors later.

A few pics, a few thoughts, and few thank yous ...

Thanks Fish-Hawk and Bobber. As always, a class A event
Thanks to my coffee delivery guys ... you have no idea how badly I needed those. :D
Eye-Tracker ... great seminar!!! Appreciate you bringing along the right equipment from Crystal. And let me be clear ... I would not have caught 1 fish without your coaching, so really, THANKS!
Topwater/ BigO - thanks for making the dinner prep so easy.
RJ - thanks for the help troubleshooting
Thanks to the fish-hawk community who came. Could not have spent a better weekend with better people.
Jeez, this sounds like an acceptance speach, so I'll leave it at that.

Looking forward to the ice fishing derby.
