Downrigger advice

Post by Jimmy_1 »

So this will be the first year for me running my own riggers.

How far back from the ball is a good distance off the release?
How tight should it be tuned to?

Thanks lads!

5ft to 100 ft. 20 ft good
In the release as loose as you can without it popping on the way down.
Reel in the slack and have it as tight as you can without the release popping.
You will learn. :)

40 feet back if your rigger is down 30-50 ft
20 feet back if any deeper. I run 80-120 ft down, 20 ft back in summer.

Drop the line in side of the boat, check the action and then clip to rigger and let it down.

Note - If your line is too far back, you need to be careful as the lure goes deeper than the ball and if you're close to bottom on the troll you may touch bottom, esp on the slow troll.

I always use a "90" rule down 70 feet let out 20 feet of line
down 50 feet let out 40 feet of line
Just what I do.

I usually run about 30ft back when under 40ft down. When deeper i start to bring in tighter.. also i watch the cannon ball,, if i start to see arches approaching or leaving the ball ,, i try pulling in tighter.
