With a certain Wing Fling coming up next weekend I have been throwing around the thought of getting a dedicated frog rod. I know a little bit about rods but not a whole lot. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated or just some advice. For the sake of the post I'll say my budget would be 250$ at the top end.

If he has one in stock, I would suggest a Dobyns Champion 735c. I absolutely love this Rod for frogging as it has a tip to really work the bait and a nice stiff backbone to pull them out of the junk.

Most of his Dobyns are priced to get out the door so again, if he has one, it should be within your price range.

If not, there will be more than enough options for you to choose from. Although I haven't used one, the Daiwa rods he's got seem petty sweet for the price as well.

+1 for the 735c or even the Savvy 735. I've fished plenty of frog rods over the years and the 735c has been my favorite, next in line for me would be the ever so coveted Loomis TWFR854.

The Dobyns 735C is an excellent choice but if Ed has a 736C, that would be my choice.

Is the difference for you the fact that the 736 is a heavy and the 735 is a med heavy? Or is there more than just that.

If you go to the Dobyns site, they explain it much better than I could.
I preferred the 736C because I fished the heavy sloppy vegetation.
I could also get more distance with the 736C than I could with the 735C.
I sold the 736C and have been using a DX746C for the past two seasons.
Best frog rod (IMO) but expensive and versatile.

The Savvy 735C that Brad added to the list is a good rod. I just found I had fewer hook ups with it. The 735 Champion just seems to be better for my style of fishing.

As for the 736 that Startzar is talking about, I have never used it but have seen that in really heavy cover, it does excel. I was using a my 735 one time and lost 2 in the thick stuff while another angler on my boat was using the 736 and had no problems landing the fish in the same situation (literally minutes apart).

This is just food for thought at this time.

how I fish, the 735 will meet my needs 90% of the time. When I start fishing that really heavy slop, that is when I believe the 736 would shine.

I use the Savvy 735C and have been doing-so for the past 3+ years. It's my dedicated frog rod. I rarely miss fish, and, it was able to pull a 6.3 pound largie out of some HEAVY Ottawa River slop with ease. Around here the 736C would get less use as it's just a bit too heavy for other applications. In a pinch, I've used the 735C for smaller swimbaits, flipping heavy matted reeds, and swimming jigs in timber. While it's not the most sensitive stick, it's bloody durable and has a ton of backbone - perfect for frogs IMO.

Like everyone is saying you can't go wrong with the Savvy or Champion 735. I've owned the savvy and sold to upgrade to the champion its a little more sensitive so i can tie up an extra jig rod if needed.

I've heard the 736 is another great rod but just wasn't for me. I couldn't get the same distance in my cast.

I am a Rideau River slop junkie.

All my heavy tackle is purpose bought for fishing largemouth in the Rideau River.

My frog rod is a Dobyns Champion 736.

Distance is no problem with this rod, I can cast a frog way, way way too far with the 736. This rod lets me work the frog but delivers concussion causing hook sets and will move a fish as required.
