I just bought one but don't know what I can catch with it or how to control it properly. I usually fish from shore so I don't know how it will work from the shore. I'm afraid it will get caught in some grass. any help?

what size are you using for casting? I use the 1oz for trolling for Northern Pike and that seems to work very well. I would think the smaller sizes would work very well for you for trout, etc

What I do is change out the treble hook for a wide gap J Hook or a short Rig 'N Hook (Owner) and then use your favourite plastic worm, creature or fish to rig it weedless.
Cast away with no fear, works especially well in rivers or strong current.
