Buddy Heater

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Buddy Heater

Post by OntarioRider »

Does anyone have any experience, or success, using a buddy heater with a large tank and hose?
I bought a hunter buddy heater in November (2014) and would like to run it off a 10 lb tank. I bought a filter for it, and had a hose here from camping.
The issue is, the tank with hose does not work that well with heater. It doesn't seem to push enough propane through it. I know that the safety in tank (ODP) creates some grief but I have turned it on, let it sit for several minutes to "pressurize" and still doesn't work well.
I have bought a few small 1 lb bottles to make sure it works, and it does. But that is not my preferred method to operate it.
Any suggestions?
Do I have to buy the mr. heater hose to get it to work properly?
Thanks.

It should work fine...I run with a 5LB and a 25lb and never had an issue.
Could it be your hose?

I have the same heater and also use the Mr.Heater hose, yes it does take several minute to pressurize, but then it works great. Once I have connected everything, I keep it connected for the season

Remember to turn the tank valve on very slowly. If you turn it to quickly the security valve kicks in and slows the release of propane. What I have been told ie: for a BBQ tank that you should take at least 15-20 seconds(very slowly) to turn the valve on. And to make sure that the heater is not on when you turn the tank on.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!
