Nice Night on the Ice!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Nice Night on the Ice!

Post by scarkner »

Spent a great (but cold) night on the ice with my favourite fishing partner.

I raised my hut about 4 inches this year (due to the high water on the ice last year). Wow, makes a big difference in how much wind comes whistling up through the holes inside the hut! Going to add collars for sure.

It was an odd night, started out so calm that we had a fire (Shirley's Bay) and BBQ hamburgers for dinner.

The night got progressively windier and eventually the ice-rain had caked everything in a thick layer of ice. That didn't stop the action and overnight we saw Ling, Walleye and Perch come through the holes (biggest Ling at 9 PM, smallest at 4 AM. Biggest walleye at 4:45AM),

One of the walleye found it's way to the pan for a wonderful breakfast.

According to Jon, it was better than burgers. I have to agree.

That's great stuff right there. My kids would love to sleep/fish on the ice. I would too actually. If you can, try to do another ice sleepover around the full moon next week. The walleyes should be on fire then...
Walleye'm fishing, you're sleeping.

Yannick and others have great huts to rent... :-)

Even though we have our own, it is a two-person. So we are renting a larger one from Yannick for later in January.

Good job Scarkner! Was nice getting to meet you last weekend. For the wind - Just shovel snow completely around your hut so its higher than your floor boards - draft will be gone.

Yeah, that worked well last year, should have done it this year but was expecting the rubber skirts to keep out the wind. Nope!
By the time the wind came up it was near midnight and I just couldn't muster up the energy to start shoveling snow at that hour!

Looking good! Hope you get lots of use out of the shack this season. Any newly invented gadgets to jig and beep while you snooze? ;)

Yeah, my shack has more lights, alarms, indicators, detectors... It's a little insane. I really need to build less inventions....

It's like trying to sleep INSIDE a Christmas tree!
