Carpenter allergic to wood?????
Carpenter allergic to wood?????
I got some pretty disturbing news today.
After 20+ years as a carpenter, craftsman, custom home builder cabinet maker I have been told I have an allergy to wood resins.
Last fall I developed a series of rashes that I thought was poison oak, they went away with cream over the winter, now that I'm wearing summer cloths again it's back with a vengance.
I just got back from the specialist and it appears I'm allergic to wood (resins).
That sucks
I think I'm going to go have a beer

Resins
Hey Matt,
So by resins you're refering to all soft-wood? As in pine, spuce, all the stuff people use?
If so, just start building more maple, and oak furniture... so what if you can't sell anything because of the price, and so what if you need gas tools to cut the stuff!!
Also you could make some beautiful poplar furniture!! it'll sell, I swear!
That's bad news for sure... but what if you get some paper cover-alls, a full breathing mask, and some gloves? it'll be perfect summer working gear!

This is much more common than you think. Carpenters on the west coast working with the more aromatic softwoods like cedar and douglas fir develop sensitivities much faster than if they were working with milder spruce and pine. Any tradesman can and will develop these sensitivities to their materials. Rashes and respiritory problems are experienced by auto mechanics to plastics handlers. It's just a matter of time. The only cure I know of is avoidance. It may not be too late for a face mask and latex gloves. If they don't work, it's time for a new line of work.

That is just too bizarre, Muskymatt.
You'd almost think you would have developed a DEsensitivity over time, but I guess it's the opposite.
Anything you can do while on the job -- fill a thermos with Benadryl or something? Then we'd have you be a very MellowMuskymatt.
Seriously, that stinks for you. Good luck figuring this dilemna out.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

muskymatt, that really sucks to read about your allergy.. I know you are quite passionate about your trade, and to have it hampered by something like this must be quite distressing. I hope they will be able to help you find a way to continue to work with wood and such.
if you need to get your mind off it, let's go fishing
