Ever seen one of these?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ever seen one of these?

Post by Cancatchbass »

While on the St. Lawrence on Friday, I came across this fish:

Image

This is a cross between a carp and a goldfish (koi). Approx. 26-28" long, probably 7-8 pounds.

Years ago a goldfish pond near my home overflowed into a drainage ditch and the fish escaped into the River. A few years later these giant goldfish started to appear in the bay by my house- all the normal colour combinations, single and double tails- you name it. I did try casting to them, but had no takers. Might be worth a fortune to Koi lovers!

You'd wonder how the goldfish could survive in pike and bass infested waters, but they obviously did. Looks like there are still some kicking around...

I can't tell from the pic -- is this one tangled up in weeds or line? (Was it dead or alive?)

They're pretty ornate fish. Never saw one "wild" before, only in garden ponds.

Looks to be a sizeable one...

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

Wolfe:

Unfortunately, this hybrid was a floater. Possibly a victim of spring viremia, a virus that is currently causing a die-off of carp in the eastern Lake Ontario basin. Same virus responsible for a die-off in 2000.

Koi are domesticated carp that have been bred for specific colour variations.

The photo shows a tancho sanke variety. A live one half that size is worth almost $500.00 US. Some koi bring prices of hundreds of thousands of dollars!

The neat thing about koi VS goldfish is that the goldfish are bread to be colourful/appealing viewed from the side while the koi are bread to be viewed from above.
Well and truly hooked!

I saw a koi yesterday at a small lake west of here swimming around healthy. It even picked up a breadball for a second. Would have made an interesting pic, people would have thought we were fishing at Petsmart! LOL
