Hi Guys/Gals.

I haven't been ice fishing to often, but why not use a chain saw, just drain the bar oil and your set and you get a nice square hole.

Ice Augers do well, but your limited to your hole sizes?

So what would be better, Big heavy Auger or Chain Saw?

Just wondering about your thoughts?

Auger for a few reasons. You are going to have difficulty using a chainsaw through three feet of ice; gonna look like you're open-pit mining. Secondly, that's to much water in then bar, engine, etc. Perhaps an old beater chainsaw would do but you'd need to dry it out quite well. My new Husg ain't gonna get used on ice unless it needs to.

We used a chainsaw with a 24"blade on it up in the St.Lawrence and made trenches 1 foot wide by 4 feet long and it was great but at the same time dangerous. To much open water for my liking but could you ever see the bottom. I personally would reccomend an auger for saftey reasons. If the ice is too thick as well it takes time to carve sections out of the ice. You could only go 22" or so then have to go to next section cut it out etc....No auger all the way for me.

A chain saw will not float for long as well, auger a little cheaper to replace.

chain could be good if you go ice fishing for shark ,,, down in the sagnenay,,,or have to do a trench under you shak for cod in st anne de la parade..that the only 2 reason you will need a chain saw.........

Isn't there a maximum size of hole that we can legally make. I tought I read a max of 10" but can't remember where ???

I laughed out loud when i saw this topic, I love being Canadian.

We've been using a chainsaw to cut holes for polar bear swimming since I was little. Ah winter saunas.

I never thought of using it for Ice fishing, but hey why not.
We've been painting the outer edge of the hole with dayglow orange paint so no one falls in, or if they're in, they can see how to get out.

I might have to giver a go this winter.

I have used my husky 61 with a 18" bar. It works well when the ice is not to thick. And it doesent get that thick around hear much anymore!

I find that the holes dont freeze up as fast either. pluss you can cut them a little larger if you like.

It is tricky some times to get the block out. I have also just puched the block under the uncut ice and slid it over to the side.

My husky still works fine. a little water wont hurt them.

Oh another thing i used to do with the saw was check the depth. Id cut a slit into the ice and used a slim jig (no hooks) to feel the bottom. Try that with a auger!

For Ice no thicker than 6" I would consider a handmade (welded) 3 tooth chisel. I've seen some that would cut a nice 10" dia. hole easy.

LISTEN Girls . I've done it all in my tiime including splashes of the axe .That chainsaw will get you wet as will the axe . Have the right tools for job .
