Mono Leader?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Mono Leader?

Post by RJ »

Hey Folks,

Does anyone run a mono leader?...I mean most are running Power Pro or something similar on their outfits...but does anyone run a mono leader either attached with a swivel or tied direct?...just curious if anyone does this...

Hello RJ,
The past four years I was running a super line with a 6 to 20 foot mono leader. Half way through last season I switched to 8-10lb Vanish. I tie to the super line and then tie to the lure...if I am in pike waters I use 20 lb Vanish.
The mono worked fine as a leader...

Same as ET. I love using vanish as leader line. Jammer just tied up some nice ones for the Pike Derby this weeked.

It's not visible to the fish, gives the lure a more natural look and doesn't harm the fish.

200 lb! WOW! you'd need a vise to cinch that knot.

Have you tried lighter? I'm thinking 60lb is plenty.

Are their any real big benefits to it? How does it hurt the fish to use just superlines?

I use to use a Vanish leader, last year I found it didn’t seam to matter if I used it on not, and I lost several big fish due to it, Now I just tie straight on.

Just curious Xenos, what kind of fish where you fishing when you were losing them? Was the line breaking? If so, was it breaking from pressure or abrassion?

I do a lot of jigging for walleye in the spring and fall. While jigging I normally hook a few musky. I can only assume the ones that have broken my line are these Musky and it’s their teeth. Musky or no musky nothing burns me more than breaking ( cutting) my line on what could be an awesome fish.

I'm trying 50lb fluro leaders for the pike/musky this year although anything thicker would be interesting to knot up... It's certainly something to try for sure and it probably only makes a difference in clear water.

Great timing on this post, as I bought some 17lb Vanish last night to give this a try this year.

Also resotcked on Tyger Leader wire that lets you tie direct, no break offs using this stuff last year. 8)

Starting to stock up for Muskrat! 20 more sleeps!!! 8)
