First Gar!!

Post by digitalchef »

Was fishing the ottawa up river from britannia bay.
Wading out at the standing reed edge.
First hour or so, I got 2 smallish pike and 3 sunfish.
Hour 2 is nothing for the first half. Change lure to a bigger diver, 3 casts and I think I'm into a nice pike....NOPE.... thank god for braid cause this thing was so tangled in line after getting it in, I had to cut it off.
7lb 14oz. 27in.

Fun fish...any idea if they are edible? Not that I'm into one, but they dont look great for the fryer :)

Very nice catch! Those fish are very interesting indeed!!!

So prehistoric looking.......Next time bring a camera so we can see the beast up close

I believe they are "edible" but their eggs are rumoured to be poisonous or something.....and can kill a human being..so i'm not sure if it would be wise to eat one haha....

They are probably extremely bony and taste similar to pike or Musky but that is just a guess.....

Take Care!

Will be in Ottawa on Friday and would love to fish. Are there any access points you would recommend for a shore fisherman? Is there a boat rental place in the ottawa area. Would like to try for bass, muskie, carp, and maybe one of those gar. Thanks for your help.
