paint & carpet

I'm looking at painting & carpeting my 14 ft fiberglass boat this spring, any information as to where i can purchase these items would be greatly appreciated,thanks in advance.

For carpet you can get indoor / outdoor grade from Home Depot or a place like that. Or you can try The Chandelry (Carling & Poulin) a bit more expensive but it's actual marine grade carpet.

For paint pretty much any EXTERIOR grade metal paint should suffice. Providing of course it's above the water line you are painting. A small boat like that probably doesn't have any paint below the water line so you should be ok.

Am i the first person on fish-hawk to ever paint their boat,

I'm not looking for lake x just a store that sells marine paint or a store that someone here on fish-hawk has dealt with in the past,once again thanks for all your help.ps: i want to paint the whole boat.

Looks to me like a guy with a handle PAINTER answered your question right at the get-go, so why would somebody else also answer when a professional has already done so?

Ok...Painting

1) If you want a quick cheap job you can get a roller and brush and do a paint job in your driveway...make sure to wash ans give the area a quick sand with fine sandpaper. then tape a line where you want to end it and paint away

2) Next up is to purchase a spray can.....you may need several with a larger boat...tape and cover at least 8-10" away from your spray line....once again...clean and give a quick buffing for max adhesion.

3) If you have a compressor and a pneumatic spray gun you can mix your own paint and have a professional finish...proper boat preparation as with the other methods is essential. Make sure you do a test piece to make sure you have the feel of the spray gun.

4) Electromagnetic painting ...the best and the most expensive....contact a supplier near you. They put a charge in the metal and the paint draws to it....

A good auto body grade paint will do ...and are very durable

doug,i wanted to paint the whole boat not just above the water line, my boat is green now but wanted to paint it dark blue. I've never done this before so i was looking for a little advice from people that have, i didn't want to paint the boat and have it peel off later,thanks for the info muskymatt,i have a compresser and a paint gun so maybe I'II give er a try,thanks again.

I did my first boat both painted and carpeted. Got the carpet at home depot and the paint was from Benjamin Moore and it turned out really good, the paint turned out great and was recommended by the owner and wasnt really expensive.

Good luck and it would be nice to see the finished product.

I repainted and recarpeted my ranger bass boat.

the thing that I found is that you can not spend too much time on your prep work for either. I took my time and sand the entire hull down and primed with two coats of Interlux boat primer. I then used TopSide Interlux paint, as long as the boat is not moored in the water the topside will work excellent and has a nice shine. It is a little more money but the results are outstanding. This paint layes very well and if you have a buddy you can tipple (brush paint) and the brush marks are nonexistant. The Chandelry sells this in many colors.

For the carpet make sure that your surface is free of any glue or carpet residue, make sure you take your time here! Luckily my old carpet came up in one piece so I was able to use that is a template. If you don't have that option cardboard from a large box will do. For the deck I used outdoor carpet glue this gives your a little time to wiggle the carpet down to the correct position, just make sure you are in a well ventilated spot this glue is wicked strong. For lids and hatches I used contact cement for its better holding strenght. You can use contact cement for the entire job but you don't have the ability to move your carpet into postion, once it touchs it sticks fast. Wicked strong smell on this stuff too. I was not happy with the nap of the carpet from the local retailers so I ordered some through Bass Boat Carpet and picked it up in Ogdensburg, but I think that Lowes or Home Depot now can special order some in. Go with 16-20 oz carpet for a little extra money you will be happier in the long run. My boat is 18ft I ordered 24ft and had a bit left over.

Maybe because some of us have actually done what he is asking. And we are sharing our experience.

Besides PAINTER could be an artist, house painter, etc.....

Yes I paint houses, and buildings, and cars, and furniture and kitchen cabinets. In homes, offices, commercial and industrial settings.

I've been at if now for 23 years. So there's a slight chance I do know a bit about painting.

Trying to get someone with no painting experience to use an electro-static sprayer is FOOL HARDY ! And yes I've even done that too.

I was trying to make it easy for him, not to overload with too much information.

Buy some marine grade paint or industrial grade enamal and go to town.

If you are using a spray can, mask / cover EVERYTHING you don't want paint on.

And yes I've painted my own boats before.
