Fiddlehead Farmers???

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Out4trout is correct, the ostrich fern grows in bunches, and the non-edible ones grow in single stalks. Not harvesting all the heads from a bunch is the best advice also. If you pick all the heads you destroy the spore producing fronds, and pretty soon, no more ferns. Good luck and good eating.

Thanks for the tip on the multi sprouts. I think I should be able to figure it out now. I'm going to head out tomorrow to take a look around. If they're not ready yet this weekend they should be good to go by next.

When you harvest em make sure to leave some so you don't wipe them out, take no more than half so they reproduce.

GOT THE FIDDLEHEADS ..NEED SOME GASPEREAUX OR SHAD

Post by gogolfer99 »

Growing up on the banks of the St John river in Fredericton we used to net a fish called gaspereaux to go with our fiddleheads. Of course we also ate shad. These fish are really bony but once you get to the meat a delicious feast. Does anyone know if either species are available around Ottawa ?

You probably won't find either one in the fish markets here in Ottawa. You can catch shad in the Ottawa, but you have to go downstream to below the Carrillon Dam. Gaspereaux don't come this far to spawn, and any of the maritime fisherman who harvest them, usually export them to the Caribbean islands as salt fish.

I did some major fiddeling around Ottawa 2 weeks ago, they are now too big here, so Deep River area should allready be happening, careful though,"life is no fun" might give you some tree hugging hassle for trying to eat one.

No, I believe the ostrich fern is a Bird. However, unlike an ostrich, it sticks it's head OUT of the sand, rather than into the sand.

Got any pics? :D
