Mosquitoes

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Mosquitoes

Post by High Noon »

Hi Folks,

We moved to a new for us house in December that has a fair sized deck. Unfortunately the mosquitoes have found it in the evening hours. I was wondering if any of you have tried some of the new bug repelant devices out there and if they work well?

Thanks

agreed on the DEET...but something that I found last year and seemed to work well was the Therma-Cell units. They sell a personal one that you can clip on your belt (i had it in the boat) or one that looks like a lantern. They were pretty effective :)

We have a small deck outside. I purchased a Therma-Cell last year because the 'skitters just are terrible. I was suprised how good they work.

A former co-worker purchased a propane powered device at CT. He likes it but wished he would have got the bigger model.

Good luck,

I also have used the Therma-cell units now for about three years, I would say they do the trick.

Did anybody try this one from CTC.

Not propane it's electric.

I need also because my rear deck is about 40 feet away from a small cattail swamp (mosquito factory) It use dto be not os bad , they used to come out from about 6:30 til about 8:30 I was almost able to set my clock from there routine. But last summer they were out all day and lasted the whole summer. They don't really bother me when they bite but they bother the heck out of my wife.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

I have a small deck off the kitchen and we sit out almost every nite in the summer. We have an empty lot next to the deck with lots of water and the skeeters get pretty bad, we have found that putting a box fan out there helps alot, they can't get near us with the fan on! We use Deep Woods Off and citranella candles sometimes but the fan does the trick! Joe.

We get mosquitoes badly as well. 2 years ago we bought ones of those screened gazebos, and it kicks butt. It's a 10' x 12' and takes up about half the deck.

Here's a few links to Health Canada's website on Mosquito Control if anyone is interested.

Those #$%&@! "mozzies" as they say in Australia.

I was just wondering about those devices you can clip on to your pants, rather than douse yourself in chemicals. I doubted their efficacy, but it seems maybe they are effective after all! I will invest in one or two and give them my own trial run this spring.

Good thread.

yes...yes...yes....

Thermo-cell units are the cat's meow. I bought one a couple years ago and it's amazing how well they work. The radius I find is about 12 to 15 feet round. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for them to really get going, but once they do, they're great. Highly recommend them.

I purchased one two years ago for camping .. and the wife thought i was nuts!! Any who ... these little gizmos only work in windless environments, so don't think of using them in conjunction with a fan.
