Why is fishing stuff never on sale at Canadian Tire?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Why is fishing stuff never on sale at Canadian Tire?

Post by SeaMonster »

Just a random observation.
Fishing stuff is NEVER on sale at Chinese Tire. (or hunting stuff for that matter, maybe the odd coat..)
Seemingly everything else is at one time or another.
Every so often maybe one kids rod/reel combo goes on sale but not much else. What's the deal?

Is it that we'll buy it anyway so why lower profits, or is the margin so tight any sale would put it below cost? Inquiring minds want to know!

P.S
OK, once, I did manage to find some half opened plastic grubs in the "off-season" discount bin. but that doesn't count.

I was just there this morning waiting around for my E-Test. Thought the same thing. Here's a super store coming into the ice fishing season, they have a weekly flyer with loads of sale items, but their ice fishing stuff will probably go to sale... my guess... March 1st.

They do put ice fishing items on for sale but usually in the Spring.....I've seen gas augers on sale for $200 less than the normal price when these sales do come out......

I bought my Frabil shelter from CTC in the spring at 50% off......if ya snooze ya lose though  I was there way before they opened up on the Friday of the sale...

Gas augers usually come on sale the week before Christmas. I've bought 3 in the last 4 years.... as for other fishing items, I can't comment.

As for hunting stuff, same thing, no real sales until the season is over, or almost over.

FYI Sales on hunting and fishing stuff other than formal national sales, are up to the individual stores ( in store specials have a deep red price tag) to run because that kind of stuff can be specific to a region( Salmon lures for Kokanee Trout do not sell well in Ottawa).

Well 4 years ago, Graembo and I pooled our CT money (2 years using multipliers putting gas in two full size trucks, and 150 HP boat motor), and bought an auger to share........all with CT money..... 2 years later, we pooled our money again, and we each had our own auger... flipped a coin for the newer one......
Last year I picked one up for my Dad.........
All were in December, and I'm sure they were all the week prior to Christmas.

All 3 are still in use..........and two of them have new pullcords..... (Thanks S.M.05)........lol.. Mike is very gentle with his equipment, he just has bad luck with other people's. :-)

I don't think you look at the weekly flyers weekly. At least once a month they have some fishing related items on sale, maybe not what you wanted to buy but they have had some really good deals in the past.

The flyer for this past week has ice fishing huts and jiffy ice augers on sale. Check out page 34 of the flyer.

I check the flyer every week. Been doing it for years. Religiously... I guess I didn't realize that the flyers and sales are regional things.

Perhaps I should clarify, I don't ice fish, so when I mean fishing stuff, I mean standard softwater thigns... lures, line, rods, reels....

NEVER goes on sale. Maybe I live in too "urbanized" an area and the selection is not good enough and no incentive... it is pretty small selection for such a huge super store.

Walmarts and CT's in more rural areas I've noticed of course carry much more selections and items... yet we have several HUGE Baron, LeBaron, SAIL, whatever here..... I guess they don't bother to compete....

I swear it's a conspiracy to keep me shopping at Baron...

It is a conspiracy for sure.

Bought every electric trolling motor I own on sale at CT and find lots of random lures not advertised on sale there.

I purchase most of my fishing equipment at CT and 90% of it is purchased when it is on sale. Its tough to wait for something to go on sale but it does happen, trust me. Infact, I look forward to friday morning, first thing I do at work before the day starts is check the CT website to see whats on sale. In 2010 I have purchased 3 rods, a couple of reels, floater suit, ice rods and reels all on sale and all in season. I do agree though they dont seem to have sales on lures and line like some speciality fishing shops do. Also if you have a CT with an expanded fishing section in your area its a good idea to check in at least once a week because they carry a lot more stuff than the standard CT and have sales on those items as well.
