What did I catch?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

The fish in the rubber net in the photo of post #2 is a mooneye.

TM,

If Im not mistaken, you Muskie guys are familiar with the Mooneye aren't you ? I know they make great bait for big pike up north in the Abitibi system, so I figure that they must be good fodder for those brutes in the Ottawa as well.

I'm pretty sure it's a mooneye as i've caught these in the Ottawa river at Victoria Island in the fall when the spawning run occours. They will bite readily on spinners thrown into the current and seem to be there in large numbers. I'm no expert but that's my 2 cents worth.

Wow, I was not expecting two pages of replies in a day! I'm leaning towards mooneye myself which is funny because when I caught it that's what I called it.

The mouth was interesting, unlike most fish I've caught, the top of the mouth went straight back from the upper jaw instead of opening up inside the mouth. And the bottom jaw moved up and down like a wooden dummy that a ventrilaquist uses.

The flesh when cooked was very mushy and had lots of long "bass like" bones plus tones of short sharp ones. I ate the whole thing anyways :o

The fish was caught in Lac St. Marie which is connected to a big river sytem, which I think is the Gatineau River. It was caught on a half inch of worm on a hook right off of the bottom.

Thanks everyone for your input, Looking at the links, that may have been close to some type of record
