Fishing from Shore / Access Points to the water

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Fishing from Shore / Access Points to the water

Post by MichaelGA »

So I'm fairly new to the area and live out west by Almonte.

I've been searching and scouring the internet for places to fish.
I don't currently have a boat but hopefully a canoe in the spring.

I've put together a map of some of the places that I've been or heard of.

Here is the link
Shore Fishing & Access Points

If you have any places to add that would be very awesome, please add them to the thread or PM me.

If you're confident with google maps then shoot me a PM and I'll add you to the collaborators list (ie. you can edit the map also).
So far it's just me but some of the data I got from other people.

Hope everyone enjoys and/or finds this useful.

Please help Anglers New to the Area and share some information!
Thanks.

I use a few different programs/software...

Google Maps Engine --> for sharing with the world
Garmin Base Camp --> for inputting DATA and research
Google Earth --> for inputting DATA
GPS --> for creating DATA (currently garmin NUVI 40 with Ontario Lakes and 2013 roads data - i'm cheap)
GIMP for PC --> for image manipulations / capture
Capture & Print for PC --> for being tricksy
Garmin Communicator for PC --> for linking between the above
Google.ca/maps --> for uploading, exporting and checking (it uses a different base map)

Integrated the second map you listed into the master one - will likely make a secondary Urban Map pin or bubble for the first map you posted.

thanks!

I see you have Blakeney above the rapids. If you don't mind wading some areas of the rapids themselves can be quite good. Just watch out for poison ivy on some of the islands.

Thanks smitty55,

I haven't tried that yet but will next year. I have waded up river from the parking area and had good success casting to the weed beds on the west side.

I think I might either make a more detailed map of that area or else just leave it with the one pin as it's getting a bit busy.
Next spring will be good as I have the cash saved up for a nice light canoe and motor. Still debating between small 4 stroke or electric though...

Yea that's a tough one with the outboards. Electric is nice and quiet but a battery only lasts so long and are heavy to carry and in the bottom of a canoe. I have a 12 ft Sportspal and have no regrets picking up an older 1.5 hp Johnson. For a weekend backlake trip a gallon of gas will do me fine and weighs much less. Plus I can use it as a fire starter on wet days lol. Canoes can only handle so much weight so a four stroke may be too heavy and they are relatively expensive. You may want to start checking for an older two stroke. You might get lucky. Then again the quiet power of an electric sure would be nice for day trips.
Here's a link to the best in class Hondas. http://marine.honda.ca/portables/BF2_3/specifications You can even get a bag to carry them like a packsack. Real nice but very dear.

Good luck with it. Cheers

Thanks for the advice smitty55!

I've added Manotick Bait & Tackle also - if anyone knows of any others please let me know.

Marko - if you have any places not on the map please post em - I'm not after your 'secret' honey hole just places where a guy can get to the water without any worries.

My local knowledge is fairly limited. I`ve only been in Ottawa for about two years now.
You can fish the dam in Appleton, there is a parking lot for a car or two right beside the dam.
I fished the Rideau Canal, just before it dumps into Dows lake as well. You can park fairly close to the locks, its 4 dollars for the day.
I also fished along Prince of Wales in Barrhaven, the name of the park where you can park escapes me. You can walk the trail and fish at few places

This is a great list. Wish I had seen something like this when I first moved to Ottawa.

I figured out most spots by trial and error!
