I recently have taken an interest in microfishing. Generally trying to catch small fish as a sideline every now and again. The gear is simple with one of my UL rods with 7x tippet leader on my fluro line with a small fly (18-22) tipped with a flake of worm.
Unfortunately all the areas I usually go to usually go to are brimming with pumpkin seed, blue gill and creek chub. If anyone has any pointers to locations where I can fish form some of the many ontario micro species in the Ottawa area I would be appreciative. Thanks!
Here are some pictures of some of the micros I have caught this summer (in and outside of ottawa).
Hit the smaller creeks and streams or at least the backwaters of any large ones.
Also any waters that are locked between two damns are pretty good for diversity. ie. between Appleton and Almonte on the Mississippi and also between Almonte and Pakkenham.
Hit the stream mouths of the Indian river and Indian creek entering the main river is also a great spot for diversity.
Basically look for small watersheds that hold water year round.
Also if you don't have already try using a small tenkara or seiryu rod. Amazingly fun going after small fish with them.

I used to enjoy netting small creeks and bringing home the fingerlings to raise in aquariums for a few years. My favorites were Rainbow Darters, Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, and White Crappie.
