Quebec Red... SMALLIE!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Quebec Red... SMALLIE!

Post by cprince »

I have a love of maps and exploring matched only by a Hispanic little girl named Dora. I have about 15 lakes that I have on my list to explore for Bass or Specks. SO many people ask about finding new lakes and worry and twist their panties in a bunch because they are afraid of failing to either find a launch or a dud lake.

Screw you and swing for the fences.

Most lakes we check out are duds. That is what makes this next lake we found so special!

Paul and I were able to get together on Sunday to explore.

I heard The Oldsmobile shatter the morning calm on my back country homestead at the late hour of 6am revving at about 6500RPM and the Princecraft's trailer springs squeaking like a violinist having an epileptic seizure on a train to Mumbai. After warm greetings, we were on our way to the unknown of the great Quebecxican outdoors.

1.5 hours later, a few errant road choices, a roadside uncoiling of last nights Pork Chupps and corn, and we found the launch of our targeted lake. Crappy beach launch with a Kardashian-like shallow drop off that usually send out of towners to the local bar. A few spins of the tires later, and we were floating out into the unknown.

Paul was dreaming about bulldog smallies SMASHING his spinner, or watching the loose line going taut with a bronzie sucking in his Senko like John Goodman toking on a plate of spaghetti... then BAM! Setting the hook so hard that only lips make it back to the boat!

I was pitching my Pig n Jig, Senkos and tubes.. cranks... NOTHING.

Tied on a pop-R.

BAM!

Image
Green senko and spinner in pic but that was all they did on this day.. hang there uselessly like Justin Beiber's common sense.

This smallie had a very noticeable red hue. DAMN ODD!!
Image

I would guess that it has something to do with its diet and the habitat... but the other smallies that were caught that day were not red. Anyone seen that before?

Every single bronzie was a BRUTE in this lake. I am not catching record beaters, but every one that I caught was over 3 lbs and half of them over 4. Ever single one on top water.

Here is an example of what was being caught on a crank:

Image

All in all a great day on a new lake with amazing potential.

Top water was the order of the day and the only thing that produced consistant action.

Image

Until next time, go out there and explore.

Adiós!

Very nice fish boys...guess the ole hatfield and Mccoy fued is over for this week...lol. Also is it wrong that the biggest thing I got out of this report was Craig uncurling his Pork Chupps!!
Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

Nice fish!! Hilarious report writeup.
The red smallmouth was likely blushing, had never been kissed before?

I'm sure there is more to this story that didn't make the report
 ...how you started the day wearing your shirt, and ended the day wearing Paul's shirt! What did you do to Paul??

You may have set an analogy record in that post, but you sure know how to set the scene. The visual one gets when he imagines a Kardashian-like shallow drop off... or the bumpy uncoiling of corn to the soundtrack of a seizuring violinist... special stuff.

After my vomit-sesh, I had a chance to look at your pics. Very nicely done.

Your moving pictures had me wondering if I was drunk Craig... but nope, no booze today.

Freaky looking smallie. Giant and red. Must have been super angry you caught it. :?

Nice fish!

I've caught one smallie like that before. It was a solid 4+ lbs and was caught in a large lake in northwestern Ontario. The lake is a shield lake, but the river leading out has a lot of fallen pine trees, and the water is stained like tea. (the rest of the lake is gin clear to 40+ feet!). The big red smallie came from the tea-stained river area. I believe the bottom composition is a reddish-brown sand, which lends itself to why the fish changes colours to adapt.
