Perhaps your in the right spot to get skunked. Fished there about 75% of the time last winter and rarely got skunked. Even caught a small sturgeon, what a treat that was.

Nice to know there will be one less fisherman there...

Walleye bay has been fishable for the last 3 weeks on and off...The ice is 7-9 inches now. With this cold spell its most likely good to go till the spring.

I've been there 4 times this year and have never gotten skunked but then again, I know what I'm doing.
This year I spent most of my money on beer, women and fishing...the rest I wasted.

Does anyone know what the quality of the water is like there? I heard about sewage and garbage being buried in and around that area, but those could be rumours. I have fished it in summer from shore and boat always had a blast there big bass huge pike and musky.

May I inquire as to what you gents are doing then?

I have been out there now 3 years in a row.
Neither myself, my group nor the guys around us had any luck.

Is it mono line you are using? fishing during what conditions? live bait?

I have always found it pretty hit or miss myself (not through lack of effort either).

Went out today past the huts and managed 4 walleye and 2 sauger. Not of great size but was a good afternoon on the ice. Some good ice out there now. I was fishing on 8-10 inches of some good blue ice.

I used 6 lb ice braid with a 24 inch 12lb test fluoro leader, on a 30 inch ultralight rod. I use a fly snap to hook a rapala jigging rap tipped with a piece of minnow. I got crappie, walleye, perch...I used a finder to run and gun...realized the fish were bitting in 22 feet of water. Out of everything I said, the most important piece of info is 22 feet of water....but that was first ice... it might change throughout season... I didn't catch anything big...but the next day my buddies did... In general you cant go wrong with a live minnow on a treble hook.
This year I spent most of my money on beer, women and fishing...the rest I wasted.

Was out Friday evening and early Monday morning at Petrie. Solid 12" of ice. 9 walleye, 4 sauger, 12 perch. 11' water. Majority of fish on a small little cleo tipped with minnow head. Largest walleye was just shy of 19" on a 1/16 ounce jig tipped with a small white Gulp twister tail. Live minnow 1' off bottom on my still line did very little both days.

I also hit Shirley's Bay with the kids on Sunday night...nothin' doin.

Good luck folks!
