Ling and a Miss

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ling and a Miss

Post by smitty55 »

I just heard today about someone catching and keeping a couple of Ling on the Miss recently. While I guess it doesn't really shock me seeing as it does eventually reach the Ottawa, which actually I find a bit surprising on it's own, I generally associate Ling with deep cold water lakes. I just haven't ever heard of them being caught on the Miss. Has anyone else? Chappee?

Cheers

HUH?

They'd need to travel up 2 sets of locks to get into the Miss....

I once was told someone caught a musky in Mississippi lake....

To me its CP jibby jabber and as such I treat it that way...

Well I hope you guys get to figure this out but really the way a lot of fish get into other lakes is via wildlife. I have caught three ling in the last few years out around Grasshopper point myself. Biggest was almost 4 lbs. The first one I ever caught scared the sh!$ right out of me when it came up through the hole..lol. Still remember wondering who was screaming like a little girl!! As for the musky three were caught last year on the Miss. One by an angler and two by the MnR is what I heard. All around 30-38"

In all of the years i have fished that lake I have never caught one probably becuase I
typically always fish the first lake, I know an old lad who had a shack in front of Flintoff bay
in the third lake and he told me they were quite common to catch up there. That was over 20 years ago so they have been in there awhile.

First I've heard of them there... but I know for sure there are Ling upstream from the Miss... so makes sense a few worked their way down.
Historically Ling were a larger part of the biomass than today.

News to me. I still really question the Musky deal. I asked the local biologist for the MNR and he had no idea of these rumors.

My neighbour Abby Hurdis who is 77 years old and fishes pretty much every day in the summer
caught a muskie in the first lake this summer and told me it took him five attempts to get it in
the net and that it was well over 20lbs. He released it, If he tells me that I believe him. This guy is a good fisherman...
King Hawes who has been a charter captain longer than most guys on this site have been alive told me about
a friend of his who caught a 3.5lb two years ago in the first lake.... These lads are well respected fisherman in our area
and have no reason to make this up.....

There is no question that there are Ling in the Miss.

Don't remember the exact year but it would have been 2003-2005. We used to have our 8x8 shack just on the edge of the village. We were jigging Crappie and then one of our static lines went off. Pulled it up and stood speechless as this thing flopped on the floor. 23" Ling. Ugly as anything. Many witnesses as it spent some time in my freezer before it was eaten. No pictures though. Pretty sure my Nokia cell on Clearnet didn't have a camera.......
Someone told me that ling come in to shallow water and spawn under the ice in late season. Can't say that's true, and I didn't research it.
