This came through on my Facebook feed. A very important read for anyone who fishes in >30'.

If you're fishing deep, be prepared to keep.
If you're a catch & release wiz, be prepared to fizz.

Great article Yan thanks for sharing. Lots of good material on this subject out there from Dr. Bruce Tufts as well.

Any time I go fishing, I go with the expectation that I might be bringing home fish. Being careful of the fishes health so I can return it to live another day, is just a perk that hopefully happens more than any mishandling or harm to the fish. It makes your day alot brighter to think about the fish you successfully released, then feeling guilty about taking one.

Important message and the high level points are somewhat accurate but much more detailed, researched info out there. Just google it. This article reads like a grade 9 science project, and this is a grad student, yikes.

I thought the article was very well put together actually. I never fish past 25 feet for this very reason. Would never want to catch a big trophy and have it die on me because of
barotrauma... much rather let those fish live and catch the ones in a reasonable depth.

Anyone who isn't prepared to deal with this situation certainly shouldn't be fishing deep.

I fizz, and have little to no concern in doing it. The only time I need to fizz is if I box a few fish for photos, otherwise throwing them right back they have the strength to do it on their own in my experience.
