Soft Water Crappie Season in East Ontario

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Soft Water Crappie Season in East Ontario

Post by OutdoorActionOntario »

Hey Fish Hawkers. I mentioned in someone else's post a little while ago that I would like to target some crappie this season. I'm looking for some fellow FH enthusiasts who might want to get in on the action in the coming next few weeks as we head into soft water season.

Even if you don't want to go fishing for them, if you could point me to a good area to focus on them in Ottawa and surrounding area I would appreciate it. Feel free to PM me, and lets have an adventure.

Tight lines!

Ottawa River & Rideau River, find a creek channel and go to town. There are plenty of good spots on the Rideau,in particular out of Kars.

Pretty much all lakes and the rivers have em. In flowing creeks, back bays, locks etc. all hold fish from time to time.

I would love to chime in but sadly I can't.

I had a great spot (Bay) on the Miss that used to produce crappie in abundance.

In recent years it's been very hit or miss.

Crappie are a blast and only this winter did I actually dedicate some time to chasing them (tons of fun).

Good luck to you!

Same advice I give every year...
The flat shiny lil buggers are strangely attracted to thills dangling from telephone lines, overhanging cattail lined creeks.
Fish under the danglers and time your arrival for the right water temps, another 2 weeks maybe 4 this year if it don't warm up soon.

I was out this morning checking my best crappie spots. The water is not too high and the creeks are starting to open. Its much too cold yet
I took water temperatures and it was 35 to 38 in most spots, the temp has to get up to about 50 or 55 for the crappie to start biting

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the various messages and PM's. Fish-Hawk clearly has a very enthusiastic group of Crappie Hunters and I am pleased to have met a few of you already!

To those who PM'd me looking to get away outside of Ottawa, I'm unable to at this time, my spots are almost all in East Ontario right now until the early part of summer due mostly to my work situation (sorry for those in the Kawartha's looking to get out)

However, there is definitely going to be a Crappie Hunt taking place soon (once in-season) either on the Rideau or the Ottawa (leaning towards the Rideau right now), so if interested once again just send me a PM and we will sort things out as we inch closer to full-on Soft water.

Cheers and thanks again to everyone.
