Will you be heading up to Qc for opening weekend? Think most lakes are still frozen? I'll probably do some Qc creek fishing this weekend 'cause the lakes I usually fish should still be frozen tight.

Usually get up to the lakes a few days before opener but won't have time to this year. Would like to here if anyone has checked up on their lakes as well and the area. I know some bigger lakes are locked up from shore-shore. Bring on the opener!

Here's how the Quebec trout opener has been since 2010:

2010: open water

2011: frozen

2012: open water

2013: frozen

2014: frozen

2015: will be frozen once again

I won't waste my time this upcoming opening weekend. The following weekend should be good to go...

I thought we were doing ok this year.
Last year was the worst I can remember.
Although I am excited for the opener I've wasted time trying to get lockjawed trout to bite in water that was too cold. Like Las year for example. Even what they were feeding on was different.
Another week and then it was on. All a matter of temp.

I do not fish for Trout but my neighbor does and he told me that his lake was frozen.
Can't remember the name of the lake but it's within one and a half hour drive from Ottawa.
He is not going on opening weekend.

Last weekend I was 100kms north of Ottawa in Quebec and the larger lakes were frozen shore to shore. Some smaller lakes with current were opening up but only in areas where the water was moving. Although we got a lot of rain and more is coming this week, the temperature isn't exactly tropical.

Most small lakes will still be iced over this coming weekend I figure.

I have no idea about trout fishing here in QC, but would very much be interested if someone would care to have a tag along.

In the meantime how far north of Gatineau might a lad find some trout. And what species would be a available?
I would love to get on to some rainbows or nice brown trout.

Thanks,
Kerrazy

And you can ask shawnD for a 'lack' or character reference as a tag along.

Kerrazy for a long time Quebec has stocked Browns in the Ottawa in a couple of locations around Hull I believe. Not sure if they still do anymore. Way back we used to fish that creek up by Cantley for Brookies. As far as I know they were naturals but I have no idea what it would be like anymore.

Cheers

Thanks Smitty, I knew above chaudier falls Brownies used to be stocked. Will have a go at those and will see if I can spot some brookies up in cantley!

Better not hear about Lac Beauchamps again in a trout conversation!

I live near Lac St-Pierre in Val des monts about 40 mins north of King Edward, and all lakes are iced up coast to coast as of this morning.

Waiting for the dandelions, and to finalize a Papineau- Labelle booking.
There's probably some flowing open water outside the park worth a try this weekend.
Focused just on specks and perhaps em Reds ( ouananiche too ? ) later in the year.
Don't need to go to la belle province for lakers, bows, splake nor brownies.
Good luck all too. :)
